It’s amazing how easy it is to overlook what is happening all around us. We get so focused on the moment that we somehow miss big things happening just outside our window. Psychologists call this perceptual blindness. Basically this means that our brains develop a “blind spot” to otherwise obvious things when we are faced with too much stimuli. With so much to do and so many people clamoring for our attention, it’s no wonder we overlook the things going on in our cities. But...this is our opportunity to take the blinders off. This is a chance to change our perception and truly discover our cities with fresh eyes.
The Pelican Life is built on 4 core values or principles. When you “join the flock” and begin to carry the message of The Pelican Life throughout the community, you agree to embody these three principles.
1. HOST A COMMUNITY MISSION TRIP
You’ve heard of a Staycation? Pick a day, weekend, or week to plan a series of service projects in your community. Simply dedicating some time to serve will open your eyes to new opportunities within your city.
2. FORM A PARTNERSHIP
Find someone, another church, a leader, an organization that lives and works in a different part of your community. Join with them to reframe and attack the issues from a new perspective. Start with churches, the Salvation Army, the Community Foundation, etc.
3. MEET YOUR NEIGHBORS
Develop relationships and serve in your own backyard! Maybe a community block party would be a great place to start.
4. GO FOR A DRIVE
Drive to the parts of town you wouldn’t normally go. (Please be smart and safe, take a friend, and understand your surroundings)
