Serving In Jamaica
July 18, 2010
Community: Lawrence Tavern

We have arrived!

by Jon Nelson | July 18, 2010 9:36 PM

We successfully arrived at the Oberlin Conference Center tonight. After our team meeting everyone was very tired and so we all headed to bed. We look forward to starting our ministry tomorrow! We have limited internet access and are hoping to post a picture and more updates tomorrow. Thanks for keeping us in your prayers!

Computers and Goats

by Brooke Pointer | July 19, 2010 12:44 PM

Everyone has arrived safe and sound, praise God! We are well-rested and well-fed. The Jamaican cooks have provided us with a delicious Jamaican cuisine at each meal. Today we were bused to Mount Charles Baptist Church on a mountain top! It is a beautiful chapel overlooking the lush hills and valleys of Jamaica. The team worked hard at setting up the computers that were donated for the children of the community. We were able to get them up and running at the church in order to teach the children basic computer skills. The team also donated a laptop to Pastor Haye, which he was thrilled about! We were so excited to see the faces of the children as they were singing along with the songs and activities of Vacation Bible School. They loved the crafts, painting, and games. It's been an amazing first day of ministry! Thank you friends and family for your prayers. We can definitely see the fruit of them here!

Monday Wrap-up

by Brooke and Dan | July 20, 2010 11:17 AM

Yesterday was a fun-filled, hard-working day. After we left Mount Charles Baptist Church where we set up computers for computer classes, conducted VBS with 58 children, did crafts and installed new windows and doors, we bused home for a savory Jamaican dinner of curried goat meat, Pepperstick, rice and peas...oh and we can't forget the cake and ice cream that followed! After dinner we went back to Mount Charles where the Jamaican youth group led us in worship and shared the word of the Lord in a powerful way. We were all blessed!

A Treat-Filled Tuesday

by Brooke and Dan | July 20, 2010 11:43 AM

This morning we woke up to an amazing breakfast. We had a traditional Jamaican cuisine consisting of porridge, scrambled eggs, breadfruit, Ackee & Saltfish and Calalloo & Saltfish. We then traveled to Mount Charles Baptist Church which is our ministry location for the week. Today a few of us painted the front of the chapel, a few of us prepared crafts for this afternoon, some worked on computers and the internet connection, while others continued installing windows and doors with Deacon Pinnock. Mr. Palmer surprised us with a refreshing treat. Around 10am, Mr. Palmer climbed a palm tree and cut down several coconuts for us. He broke them open and our thirst was quenched with fresh coconut water. We then scooped out the coconut for a tasty treat. Lunch arrived and the clouds rolled in for a nice afternoon breeze and rain shower. The children of the community arrived an hour early for VBS today. The crafts were a hit and everyone is smiling. Praise God for being in our midst again today!

by PPM Staff | July 22, 2010 9:19 AM

Dozens of Jamaican youth had a blast doing the VBS crafts

Loving on the Kids

by PPM Staff | July 22, 2010 9:23 AM

We had over 100 kids come out for VBS on Wednesday. The entire team was making heart felt connections, spreading the love of Jesus, and being warn out by the inexhaustible energy of the kids!

Coconuts

by PPM Staff | July 22, 2010 9:29 AM

We all enjoyed a special treat as the Jamaican staff at Mt. Charles church cut down a coconut for each one of us off a tree right behind the church. It was a hot day and drinking the fresh coconut water was not only a once in a life time exotic experience but very refreshing as well!

Computer center!

by PPM Staff | July 22, 2010 9:37 AM

One of the most amazing things we have been able to do down here is to set up a computer center so that the church can be a resource to help students develop critical skills to help them succeed and break out of the cycle of poverty. It was amazing to see the students come alive as we taught them basic skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. This could not have been possible without all of the generous donations provided by the members of Milford church. Thank You so much for your generosity! We were also able to give a laptop to the Pastor of Mt. Charles Baptist Church, Rev. Eswine Haye. We cannot begin to tell you how blessed and excited he was to receive this gift, which will be a tremendous ministry tool. He has been non-stop smiles! Thank You!

Building Windows

by PPM Staff | July 22, 2010 9:42 AM

When we arrived, one of the primary goals of the Mt. Charles church was to have us construct windows in their facility. We met up with their tradesman, Mr. Mark Pinnock who quickly recruited a team of apprentices. For the past three days they have worked hard and constructed 7 windows. The team of apprentices has all commented on how special it was to learn this valuable skill and to work with Mark. Thanks for all your donations which helped us purchase critical supplies!

Evangelism!

by PPM Staff | July 22, 2010 9:54 AM

Tuesday and Wednesday we sent out a team of about 10 people out into the community to meet the local people and share the love of Jesus. We gave them over 160 "slippers" (flip-flops), which they loved! We invited them to our VBS, church service, and computer classes. Several of our team had some great conversations and we saw the fruit of our labor as our turnout for VBS and the services doubled from Monday to Wednesday. On Wednesday the team also encountered a tremendous downpour and had to utilize their ponchos. They came back drenching wet, but full of joy for their labor!

Ocho Rios, Goodbye Jamaica!

by PPM Staff | July 23, 2010 4:47 PM

Today our team enjoyed a wonderful day in Ocho Rios. Although it rained this afternoon, most were able to swim and shop for souvenirs in the touristy town. God has been so good to us, it's hard to say goodbye after our week of ministry on this beautiful island. This evening we'll have our final worship and debriefing at the conference center. Thank you all for your prayers and support from back home. We'll be returning to you soon. Goodbye, Jamaica... for now at least.

I enjoyed a wonderful time of prayer with 5 ladies here at our home this afternoon! We prayed for each of you as you finish your time there that you would continue to minister to the Jamaicans and for a safe travel home. We all LOVE the wristbands and enjoyed telling stories about them. God be with you for your last night and travels home tomorrow!! I can't wait to see you Jon and hear your "Jon laugh"! Love & Hugs, Cindy O'Brien

Hey Guys. I just wanted to let you know that these wrist bands are a hit. Several of my co-workers have asked why I'm weaing it, and has open up incredible conversations, about you all and the ministry your doing. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, and the lives you are touching as well as the lives here you have touched. God bless you and I'll see you at the Airport.... Z, I miss you...

Hey Team!! Just a thought or two for you guys as you come to an end to this part of God's work....no doubt you are all changed people, coming home to family and friends that have missed you. Your hearts may be heavy at the thought of leaving the new connections you have made, but remember that we are ALL ONE CHURCH, you are going to see many of them again!! So, although you are winding down, know that you have DELIGHTED the Father's Heart this week, and we know that Psalm 37:4 says, "Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart." I will be praying for your "goodbyes", I know how hard they will be. We are anxious and excited to see ALL OF YOU!

"What A Mighty God We Serve". It is awesome to see how God is working both there in Jamaica and here at home..simultaneously. The bracelets are definitely working here as a means to share with others what God is doing in Jamaica through the MBC Youth Group Ministry. Thank you for the pictures and the daily updates. We pray for you daily that God's light will shine through you in whatever task He sets before you, and the info you send gives us more specifics to pray for.May God continue to richly Bless each and everyone there. We know your hearts will be forever touched by the memories of this mission trip as will be the hearts and minds of the Jamaican children. We love you & miss you all. Shine On!

Hi everyone, it is so exciting to read the high lights of what you're doing, and how the Lord is using you there. A very descriptive name for God is Jehovah Jira - The Lord Provider; and He has shown Himself as just that, so far this week. From everyone getting there safely, to the luggage making it without any loss or damage, to getting the computers set up, and the great response in the VBS program. I can't wait to see how things continue to proceed through the rest of this week. Praying for the Lord to continue to guide, protect, and work in the hearts of each of you as you minister in His name, for His glory. Andy we love you and are so proud of you making, serving God a priority in your life. Papa and Grammy send their love, and want you to know that they and your Aunts and Uncles are all keeping you and the team wrapped in prayer. Looking forward to seeing the new posts and hearing more fully about all that you did there. Grace and Peace, and lots of Love, Dad & Mom

Stephanie - we love and miss you! We're taking good care of Jeff, making sure he gets a good meal at dinnertime! Haha! Meg, we miss you and love you, but we are grateful that you are following the Lord's leading, and we are trusting Him to fulfill HIs purpose for you. We are trusting this for each of your team members, too. We are all still wearing our bracelets, so this is a good reminder to pray for the team - and Kelly, Shannon, and Steve, we are wearing bracelets with your names, so we especially pray for you!

It is with tear filled eyes that I read these journal entries! I am thankful to our Lord for bringing this team safely to Jamaica and giving them an awesome time already! We pray many times daily for God to do amazing things in the heart of not only the Jamaican people, but the teens that are on the trip! God has us specifically praying for Jon, Zach and Stephanie this week and we have not forgotten! Keep us posted each day as we love to read what is going on and would love to see more pictures too! Mr. T

July 21, 2010 9:19 AM

Hello MBC Youth Mission Team!!!! I am wanted to say that I am proud of each one of you. Leaving the comfort of your home to help people in need is not something everyone does. To see this trait in a group of teens shows that there is hope for tomorrow's world! I am sorry that this year I could not attend the mission trip. With the move, the job assignment I am on, and attending graduate school there was just no possibility. I do miss my teen counterparts and wish I could be there with you. I miss you all! Take care, stay safe, and do good things! Remember don't eat chicken cooked on motor oil and cardboard! Mr. T.

Hey Guys, Just a quick note to let you know that all the nurses and doctors at the Sparta Surgical Center in NJ here at home got to hear about your trip and all you are doing to share the word of God in Jamaica! Mr Yak was asked to take his bracelet off before surgery today and he made a point of saying he couldn't and went on to share what you were doing and how proud he was of his children and the youth group (and adults) in general who were working in Jamaica this week!! There were lots of questions asked about our church, youth group and missions in general!! One of the nurses (Mary) is praying for you this week as well! Praise God for the opportunity to share about the Lord today and we realize we may not have had that opportunity if we did not have your bracelets on!! Jen and Steve, Dad did great with his surgery and can't wait to show you his immobilizer when you get home. Much Love!

Praises for a safe arrival, jobs well-done, a successful VBS and a well-fed team! All are in the thoughts, hearts and prayers of your MBC family... it was good to see so many braclets worn by the Milford congregation. Continued prayers for the Jamaican people, your effective ministry, continued safety, growing your faith and a clear vision of the path the Lord has laid out before you. Everyone looks forward to the next post and to hear more of your experiences serving Him. It feels odd knowing that there are more Ashworths in Jamaica than in Milford!
