Serving In Jamaica
June 15, 2009

We have arrived safely!!

by Emily Porter | June 16, 2009 8:32 AM

We promptly arrived in Montego Bay yesterday afternoon! We were greeted by a rain shower as we drove along the beautiful Jamaican coast to Hopewell where we settled into the Hopewell Deliverance Center. After unpacking and getting used to our home for the week, we visited Hopewell Baptist Church and met Paster O'Niel Brown. We also enjoyed a delicious dinner of chicken, fish, and rice and "peas" (aka beans). Tuesday we are looking forward to morning devotions in a local high school, construction at the church and mission house, and Vacation Bible School! We appreciate your prayers and will be keeping you updated and posting pictures in the days to come!

School Visit and Construction

by Jennie O. | June 17, 2009 8:53 AM

Tuesday morning kicked off with a visit to the high school. Both St. Marks and Wheelersburg were able to visit with students about their faith in Christ. Afterward, we got started on the two construction sites. We are filling in the foundation for the church mission house. One day that will be a parsonage! We also hauled rocks at the church to mix cement for the Sunday school room addition in the back of the church. Our bucket brigades were moving mountains!

Sports and VBS

by Jennie O. | June 17, 2009 8:56 AM

It was incredible how as soon as we got on the bus finishing construction, it started pouring rain. God is so good! After a little rest and some time for planning, we played soccer (football) with the community members who came out. They can really play!

VBS--God Protects Us

by Jennie O. | June 17, 2009 9:00 AM

The children came to church in spite of overcast weather and spent time sharing smiles, hugs, and singing together. We learned how God protects us and illustrated the armor of God. The children of all ages were so happy to make their butterflies during the craft time!

Beauty in God's Creation

by Jennie O. | June 17, 2009 9:03 AM

Everyone is enjoying themselves, eating well and attempting to learn the local lingo. We so enjoyed reading your comments at our meeting last night. Here's a peek at the view from the hill! With love from Hopewell, Jamaica.

Wednesday was nonstop! In the morning, we led school devotions at the middle school, then headed to our construction projects for a full morning. After lunch, we held a puppet show for the preschoolers. They loved it! We went prayerwalking in the afternoon, but heavy rain shortened that time. Still, all of the Bibles that we brought were gratefully received. In the afternoon, our theme for VBS was "God gives us His Spirit". The children are making dear friends among the team. They come back for multiple hugs! We had curried goat for supper. Pastor Perry led the Bible study and we looked at the many portraits of Christ through the gospel of John. It was powerful to see how Jesus can fulfill so many roles for us and meet us in our need. After a really full day Wednesday, we started the morning off with a swim and some time to be in God's Word. We needed it! God continues to provide us with energy, focus, and love.

Preschool Puppet Show!

by Emily Porter | June 19, 2009 7:42 AM

On Wednesday we had an opportunity to put on a puppet show for the group of preschool children who attend school at Hopewell Deliverance Center. The children were thrilled by the performance. The puppets danced to some songs and then put on a show about friendship. They enjoyed it so much, they asked for another performance. We are planning on doing another show on Friday!

Thursday's Ministries

by Emily Porter | June 19, 2009 8:05 AM

Today we were blessed with a relaxing morning at a local Jamaican beach. It was a perfect day for swimming. In the afternoon we visited an infirmary in Lucea. The infirmary is home to about 50 residents who are too old or sick to care for themselves. We spent some time singing worship songs with the residents. We also had a chance to visit and pray with some of them. After our visit we headed back to Hopewell for VBS. The story of Esther was the theme of the VBS. Tyler, Brandon, and Nate entertained the children by putting a skit. All three boys dressed up as queens (wigs, makeup, dresses, and all.....) in order to win the king's heart. However non them were as beautiful as Miss Lexi (Esther) who won the contest and became the next queen. During VBS today Jim had an opportunity to tutor a man named George. Jim and George were also able to talk about their faith and fellowship with eachother during this time. This has been another fantastic day. We have been enjoying your comments and are thankful for your prayers! To God be the glory!!

Finishing up

by Emily Porter | June 20, 2009 4:21 PM

Friday was our last day of ministry. We started the day with construction at the mission home that we have been working on. We were able to fill in two entire floors with rock and marl. A great foundation for the house! After lunch we performed another puppet show, had some quiet time, then headed to church for our last day of VBS. The theme for the last day focused on God's forgiveness. All the children made salvation bracelets. At the end of the evening, we gave out soccer balls to the children. We finished the day off with an awesome farewell service at Hopewell Baptist. Dave preached a message on reaching people "at the well level" as means of ministry. On Saturday we headed to Dunns River Falls in Ocho Rios for a recreation and unwinding day. We climbed the falls two times then went into the city for some Juicy patties (a Jamaican staple) and some shopping time. This evening we are going to have a debriefing meeting and a closing dinner. We will attend the first part of church service tomorrow at Hopewell Baptist before heading home. See you all soon!!

Flying Home

by Jennie O. | June 21, 2009 1:27 PM

With lots of hugs and tears, we left the church service this morning. Our friends at Hopewell prayed for us and blessed us as we said goodbye. I know many of you friends and family have missed us. Thank you for your comments. They were a huge encouragement and made the trip even more special. Ready or not, here we come home!

Rely on the Lord as you come near the finish line of your experience. He is beside you and will carry you across no matter the circumstance. Be calmed by the knowledge that you were chosen to answer that part of the Lord's Prayer that says, "thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on Earth as it is in Heaven". How awesome that you've had the opportunity to be Kingdom builders!

Good Morning! What a thunderstorm we had in Findlay! It made me think of the story of when Jesus was sleeping on the boat with his discipes in the midst of a storm...his disciples were afraid yet the Lord rested peacefully. When they could bear their fear no more, they woke their Lord...he rebuked the storm and there was calm. Isn't it something that Jesus knew the peace of His Father so well that he slept through the storm!? Check it out in Mark 4 and see what the Lord wants to reveal to you. Another good storm story is when Peter walks on water (Mt 14)...WOW ...when He kept His eyes on Jesus He could do the impossible! May the Lord bless you for getting out of the boat and may you keep your eyes on Jesus ane watch Him do the impossible in your life!!! Be encouraged and strengthened in your faith as you serve our Lord!

May you KNOW how much you are Loved by God so that you may Love others in the way He loves you...relentlessly and abundantlly! May you know that the strength that is in you comes from our Risen Savior...that the same power that raised Jesus from the dead dwells in every believer through the Holy Spirit!!! May you know that you can do all things and that there is nothing that is impossible with God because of what Jesus did for us on the Cross! Serve in His love, grace and strength! Thank God for your safe arrival. We enjoy reading your journal entries. You are keeping busy in the Lord's work and for it you will be richly blessed. Your ocean views as indicated by the photos are a departure from the misty, cloudy view here in Findlay this morning. Isn't God wonderful ? Here we are communicating God's Kingdom work from such a distance. From creation God has been the master of communication. He's been speaking with us heart to heart! Know that daily our hearts, through Christ, are with each of you. Have a spirit-filled week. Hi to Kayla and Chelsea.

Lex, I know you're truly enjoying what you're doing and you need to take it all in. This will be a memory that will live on in you for the rest of your life. Enjoy yourself and stay focused on the mission that you have been tasked to do. I am so proud of the accomplishments you have achieved already in your life but I think I am the most proud of what you are not only doing for the people there but what you're doing for yourself. You and everyone else are a part of something very special. After all this is over, only then will you realize what an impact you had on another person's life. Wow...overwhelming! I am so proud of you and I miss you very much! I LOVE YOU PUNKIN!
