Pastor Edgar leads a vibrant and thriving church community in Lagunilla, Costa Rica. Today, he is energized in his ministry and has a church that is active in its community, but there was a time when it wasn’t as full of life and light.
When Edgar started leading at this particular church in 2010, he had heard that pastors typically didn’t last long. It’s a rougher neighborhood, and the community was less than welcoming to his family, as they were not from the area. They struggled through that initial season, feeling isolated and discouraged. And on top of that, two years into their ministry, an earthquake caused widespread destruction in the region. The church building was demolished, and the people of Lagunilla were devastated by the sheer magnitude of what had been destroyed.
“We didn’t have a safe place to gather and worship,” says Pastor Edgar. “We hit that hopeless point in which leaving and ceasing from pastoring this church was a reality. Here is when we hit rock bottom and, at our lowest, PPM came into the picture.”
Over the past seven years of hosting teams through Praying Pelican Missions, the church building has been almost entirely rebuilt and teams have helped to revitalize the community as well. Alongside members of the church, mission teams have assisted in women’s and children’s ministries, pulling in community members that hadn’t previously been connected to the church. Pastor Edgar says, “The companionship that the PPM staff and teams have given to our family and to our church has been fundamental for our spiritual life. PPM has cried with us through our trials and celebrated with us in our victories during all of these years.”
Pastors like Edgar are the reason we exist. It’s our heart at PPM to connect the local Church on a global level, providing encouragement, support, and renewal to local leaders and congregations who are being the Good News to their communities.
