Stop Building a Movement and Just Move

Stop Building a Movement and Just Move

Mike Rhoades | Mar 3, 2015

Everything is about a movement these days. We're not building a church we're building a movement.  It's not a youth group it's a movement.  This isn't a fundraiser, it's a movement...(of your money to my account). Movements are great, I love movements.  If you've never been experienced a movement of God you should try it, I highly recommend them. In a movement of God we are swept up by the inertia of God's incredible presence as he weaves His way through the room igniting our passion and inhabiting our worship.  Absolutely nothing wrong with that. But getting caught up in a movement is not what we are talking about.  We're talking about creating movements. Is there a difference?  I think so, it's actually a big difference.  It's surprisingly easy to create a "movement."  You need three things.  A common goal...wells in Africa, lost souls for Christ, gay rights.  Just pick one.  A charismatic leader...a motivator who can move people.  And, resources...money, people, product, marketing, etc.  The problem is, movements are all about US and very little about God. Stop building movements.  (speaking to myself here)  Movements are all about us and our glory, pretty sure God isn't impressed by our awesomeness. God never called us to build a movement, He called us to move.  Get busy.  Find a need and step into that need trusting in His provision.  Seek out young people who need to here about Jesus and share the Good News of the Gospel.  Who cares if they come to youth group, the stakes are higher.  It's heaven and hell. John 15 teaches us that apart from God our work, all our ideals, all our incredible leadership means absolutely nothing.  But honestly, we're really not about the work of God.  That is unless we get recognized for it. (ouch, too close to home on that one)  But what's more important, building movements or God moving? Find out what God loves and start moving toward it. He loves worship, don't design a worship service just start to worship. God's heart breaks for the lost, go share the good news, go on a mission trip, invite a friend who doesn't know Jesus to coffee.  Rest assured, God is moving. Since joining Praying Pelican Missions I've seen first hand the difference between a movement of God and a movement of man.  The difference is often hard to ignore.  In my former job as a pastor I spent countless hours discussing how to move people, how to grow our congregation.  I was good at starting movements.  But in January God reminded me exactly what He cared most about. Sitting on the back step of a primitive church building on top of a mountain in Haiti, I witnessed a spontaneous eruption of worship.  People picked up drums.  Passers by stopped and joined in. People separated by language were connected in worship.  In short God moved, we jumped in, and we were caught up in an amazing moment. Let's get moving and stop worrying about movements.
