PPM Disaster Response: Dam Failure: Severe Flooding in Libya
Libya has recently faced a catastrophic flooding event caused by Storm Daniel, leading to a substantial loss of both human lives and property. The storm unleashed an immense amount of rainfall in the northeast of Libya, resulting in the collapse of two dams and the subsequent flooding of already inundated areas.
Initial reports suggest that the current death toll has exceeded 5,000 and is anticipated to climb rapidly, with an estimated 10,000 individuals still unaccounted for. Derna, in particular, bore the brunt of the devastation, with reports indicating that a quarter of the city has vanished. Entire neighborhoods have been swept away, and bodies have been found scattered across the region, including in the sea, valleys, and beneath collapsed buildings.
This disaster is the latest blow to a country that has been riven by political infighting, corruption, and external interference since a 2011.
Please join us in prayer for the country of Libya in this difficult time. We will keep you updated with ways you can give to support the victims of this flooding.
