Bienvenidos a Guatemala!

by Katrina Hulme | March 17, 2024 12:45 AM

We made it to Guatemala! It was a long travel day, but we cannot believe we are finally here! After a quick stop at Walmart, we made it to lodging for a brief orientation meeting and dinner. We are excited to be with our Guatemalan church family tomorrow and to dive into ministry!

Bilingual Worship

by Katrina Hulme | March 17, 2024 2:34 PM

The church members led some worship songs in Spanish, and then Jon led us in some English worship songs! Pastor Jon also shared a message that encouraged us and the local church - God is powerful, He hears us, and He qualifies those He calls.

After church, we had local artisan pastries made by a church member while we fellowshipped with the church volunteers that we will see throughout the week. The pastries were delicious!!

Visiting the El Carmen

by Katrina Hulme | March 17, 2024 3:02 PM

We visited a few families in the community close to church to pray and encourage them. Some of them are passing through difficult circumstances that have caused them to leave the church. So, we pray that the Lord speaks through us and touches their hearts to know that He has not forgotten them.

Time with Pastor Carlos

by Katrina Hulme | March 17, 2024 6:55 PM

This afternoon, we took some time to hear from Pastor Carlos! He shared his testimony that is full of incredible stories. The Lord began calling Pastor Carlos as a teenager, but he didn't accept that call and continued living life as normal. He identified with Jonah a lot, because the Lord called him five times but he kept running from that calling. Now, he has been a Pastor of this church for 17 years! He encouraged us to listen to God's calling on our lives, because his plans are better than we could ever imagine!

Morning Projects

by Katrina Hulme | March 19, 2024 12:38 AM

This morning we spent some time working on some various projects around the church, including moving items, ripping up old flooring, and cleaning. We also had time to prep for VBS and put up some pretty awesome decorations!

VBS Prep

by Katrina Hulme | March 19, 2024 12:42 AM

We have done a lot of prep work for the VBS before coming to Guatemala, and today we put some of the finishing touches on the church to welcome kids into this space. And of course, we had to practice our dances as well!

Giros & Vueltas!

by Katrina Hulme | March 19, 2024 12:47 AM

And so it begins! We had around 30 kids come today for VBS, and we had so much fun. Our theme of the week is Twists & Turns, and our Bible lessons talk about Peter's encounters with Jesus. We pray that these kids also experience an encounter with Jesus this week!

Rooftop Worship

by Katrina Hulme | March 19, 2024 12:52 AM

After dinner at Ericka's house (our wonderful cook this week!), we spent some time sharing our highlights from the day, worshiping together with the city sounds in the background, and heard a devotional about being a part of bringing the Kingdom of God to earth this week. It was a beautiful evening and a wonderfully full day!!

Food Distribution

by Katrina Hulme | March 20, 2024 1:23 AM

We split into two groups for food distribution this morning. As we visited homes in the community near church, we learned a little bit about their lives, prayed with them, and blessed them with a bag of groceries.

We visited some houses on some steep hills and got some exercise in!!

Young at Heart

by Katrina Hulme | March 20, 2024 1:32 AM

The families that we are visiting are all passing through a variety of difficult circumstances, and many of them are elderly. Today we spent a lot of time with this 94 year old who still likes to walk the neighborhood and the sweetest abuela who loved all our different hair colors & styles! These visits are more than just groceries - we are practicing the ministry of presence!

VBS Day Two!

by Katrina Hulme | March 20, 2024 1:34 AM

Today we saw many of our friends again, as well as some new friends! We are tired, but we are giving all our energy to these kids... which they have lots of as well!!

All of Heaven Rejoices!

by Katrina Hulme | March 20, 2024 1:38 AM

During VBS, we shared the Gospel and invited kids to accept Jesus into their hearts - and nearly all of the kids said yes!

We pray that this would not be an emotional decision or just something to do, but that the Lord would continue to work in them as they grow and that they would choose to keep following Jesus. Praise God!!

Bonfire & Worship

by Katrina Hulme | March 20, 2024 1:41 AM

Tonight we had a bonfire and worship night. We sang songs in English and in Spanish, Sam & Gracie shared some devotions, and we enjoyed the traditional Guatemalan Fruit Punch. This is a hot drink that is typically served in December, but the church made it special for us!! It was a beautiful night!

Ministering to Abuela

by Katrina Hulme | March 21, 2024 2:32 PM

During food distribution, we visited this lovely woman that is known as a Grandma of the church. We heard about her incredible faith and support of the church in the midst of some challenging circumstances, but the church has seen miracles through this family! We also had a chance to pray for the family as well

The Lord is Moving!

by Katrina Hulme | March 21, 2024 2:37 PM

We visited a church member who is still having some issues with her foot since our visit last year, but she continues to say "why would I be angry or sad? That's not good for me!" So she turns on worship music in her home, and praises God for what He has done!

We also spent time talking with her son who grew up in the church, but hasn't been for a few years. He even said that his boss unexpectedly told him not to come to work today, and then we showed up! We were able to encourage him as he is wrestling with his faith, and we really feel that the Lord orchestrated the time with him!

BINGOOOOO!

by Katrina Hulme | March 21, 2024 2:39 PM

We had a lot going on during our last day of VBS, and one of those things was Bingo! Will and Ves got to practice their numbers in Spanish, and they got really good at yelling out BINGOOOOO!!!

Precious Fish

by Katrina Hulme | March 21, 2024 2:41 PM

We had lots of new kids come to VBS on the last day, and many of them were from the families that we visited during food distribution! We were so happy to see them and add their names to our wall of fishies!

Our VBS Family

by Katrina Hulme | March 21, 2024 2:49 PM

We had so much fun this week with Giros & Vueltas, and we can see our efforts paying off in the relationships and smiles from the kids! It was a sad afternoon saying goodbye, and tears were shed, but we cannot wait to see our friends again next year!

Craft Station

by Katrina Hulme | March 21, 2024 2:51 PM

Bekah did an amazing job running the craft station this week! The kids made a variety of things that they can bring home with them to remember this week and that Jesus loves them!

Women's Ministry

by Katrina Hulme | March 21, 2024 3:08 PM

Sandi planned a wonderful afternoon with the women while VBS was happening! We had crafts, a devotion, and some fun gifts for them to bring home with them. Several women came up to thank Sandi for the way that the ministry blessed them!

Hasta Luego!

by Katrina Hulme | March 21, 2024 3:25 PM

We said "see you later" to our new family at Iglesia Jireh during an evening service. We shared our gratitude, worshiped together, and enjoyed yet another delicious Guatemalan snack. We are honored to be here, and we look forward to seeing what God will do in the next year until we return!

Setting the Fire!

by Katrina Hulme | March 21, 2024 3:34 PM

We ended the evening by spending time to thank & bless Pastor Carlos & Pastora Reina. We have been encouraged by them and we will continue praying! Pastor said that our visit has been like a bomb was set off in the community to encourage everyone, and we pray that the fire was lit to keep the church going through whatever comes in the days ahead!

Pizza on a Volcano!

by Katrina Hulme | March 21, 2024 3:37 PM

For our last day in Guatemala, we went to Pacaya Volcano! We rode up on horses and then got to check out the cooled lava rock up top. Some of us also bought pizza that was cooked by volcanic rocks, and it was delicious!
