Welcome Back, Archbold Evangelical!

by Alissa Danielson | June 11, 2023 3:03 PM

We are so excited to be in Alaska! For some of us, we are returning for a second year in a row. For others of us, it’s our first time in Alaska. Regardless, we are expectant that The Lord has some incredible things in store for us this week! Please pray for us as we partner with Peninsula Grace in Soldotna this week!

Peninsula Grace

by Alissa Danielson | June 11, 2023 3:09 PM

It is our second time partnering with Peninsula Grace Church in Soldotna, Alaska! It’s so exciting to be back! We plan to assist them with a few light projects around their campus, and be an extension of their ministry into the community. PG is hosting their VBS this week, so we will also be offering some support during that time too!

Alaskan Arrival

by Alissa Danielson | June 11, 2023 3:09 PM

We arrived in Anchorage late on Friday evening and stayed at a hotel. On Saturday, we met our PPM staff and started our main goal for the day: to drive to Soldotna! Our first stop was Arctic Roadrunner, where some of us enjoyed salmon or halibut burgers. Lunch was delicious!

After lunch, we spent time shopping for souvenirs in downtown Anchorage. After that, we started on our 3 hour drive to Soldotna.

Local Youth Group

by Emma Wiering | June 11, 2023 10:14 PM

This afternoon we met with the Peninsula Grace youth group at the local high school. Here we enjoyed games of ultimate frisbee and capture the flag. We had a wonderful time getting to know these students. Many great connections were made and we are excited to continue seeing them at the church throughout the week.

VBS Dinners

by Emma Wiering | June 12, 2023 2:05 AM

This week Peninsula Grace Church is holding Vacation Bible School. Our team has the pleasure of cooking dinner for all of their volunteers each night. The students did a wonderful job at taking ownership and responsibility of the meal. They greatly enjoyed serving the community and getting to know each family. We're excited to continue this throughout the rest of the week.

Vacation Bible School

by Emma Wiering | June 12, 2023 2:09 AM

As Peninsula Grace hosts VBS each night, we have been asked to step in as needed. Members of our team did a great job at adapting to what was asked of them. Whether that was snack duty, leading a class, or leading various activities. The students have shown great leadership and servanthood by jumping in as necessary. Many great memories and stories have already been shared about the children they got to meet during this time. We are excited for more VBS to come!

Shopping Crew!

by Emma Wiering | June 12, 2023 8:03 PM

This morning part of our ministry was grocery shopping. We headed to the store and shopped for all the supplies for tonight’s VBS dinner! It was a great way to be apart of a smaller group and get to know each other better!

Sanctuary C rew!

by Emma Wiering | June 12, 2023 8:10 PM

Since we split up into smaller groups this morning, another team worked on more construction based projects. In the church’s sanctuary, this team took down old sound tubes. Then filled in the holes and sanded them smooth. Tomorrow we will finish this project by painting over the areas.

Stephen and Nathanael were excited to be back in the sanctuary after dedicating some time to the sound tubes last trip!

Decor Crew!

by Emma Wiering | June 12, 2023 8:13 PM

This team worked on decorating the vacation Bible story room again! This room is used to reenact Bible stories. It brings these stories to life for the children. It's so much fun to watch how engaged the children are during this time!

Look at the cute theme for the story of Zacchaeus!

Playground Crew!

by Emma Wiering | June 12, 2023 8:59 PM

Our 4th group worked on tidying up the playground. First they made a trip to the store to get the necessary tools and equipment. Then they worked on getting all the rocks back into the playground structure. They then edged this and will be replacing what holds the rocks in so they no longer spill out. Here is a picture of Pedro working alongside Paul, a member of Peninsula Grace. Pedro enjoyed getting to know Paul and his story!

Kenai Food Bank

by Emma Wiering | June 12, 2023 9:03 PM

Today some of us got to return to the Kenai food bank. We worked here last summer and it was such a sweet thing to return and see familiar faces. We got the privilege of eating lunch here prepared by the chefs and conversing among the locals. We all heard many amazing stories and met great people as we ate. While we were here we worked on putting together pallets of food, cleaning, and lots of planting seeds in their garden!

Vacation Bible School Dinners

by Emma Wiering | June 12, 2023 9:05 PM

Tonight we cooked another meal for VBS volunteers. It’s such an amazing opportunity to give back to this community. We have been so blessed by the conversations we’ve had with congregation members during this time. They truly shine Gods light and it’s been such a joy getting to know them.

Amundsen Educational Center

by Alissa Danielson | June 12, 2023 10:12 PM

Half of our team went to Amundsen Educational Center today! AEC is a post secondary training school and is dedicated to “building hope”. Most of their students are Alaska Natives that leave their villages to receive trade training and discipleship at AEC. Our team helped organize a storage closet and move furniture, but our conversations with Mike and Elder Joshua were so much more memorable.

Mike, the executive director of AEC, shared about village culture and the epidemic of suicide that is prevalent in Alaska. Alaska Native males are 7x more likely to commit suicide than any other Alaskan. We commit to pray for that to change, and for people to find true hope and peace in Jesus.

Joshua, the residential director at AEC, shared his testimony of God rescuing him from addiction. He challenged us to remember to pray for AEC, Alaska, and all those in bondage to addiction.

One Log at a Time

by Emma Wiering | June 13, 2023 9:54 PM

We were back at the Kenai food bank this morning. Our biggest job was moving logs to a new area to be able to split them tomorrow. Once we moved all of the smaller logs, we started up the chainsaws and began cutting the bigger logs. These logs will be given out to locals to heat their homes in the winter. This is a huge relief for the food bank as we begin stocking up for winter.

Campfire on the Beach!

by Emma Wiering | June 14, 2023 2:31 PM

Tuesday night after VBS we headed to Kenai beach. Here we made a campfire and huddled up close to one another to block out the wind. Although it was quite cold, this time was a memorable experience. We were able to share and reflect on the ministry from earlier in the day. We also took time to affirm one another and share how we have seen them shine Gods light this week and show their servant heart. (Believe it or not this picture was taken at 9:30pm!!)

Last Day at Kenai Food Bank

by Emma Wiering | June 14, 2023 2:39 PM

Today is our last day of ministry at the Kenai food bank. Some of us are working on finishing up cutting and splitting the wood for winter. A few more of us are inside helping in the kitchen. Each day, the food bank prepares and serves a hot meal for the community which they graciously serve to our team as well. We have been helping them set the dining room, prepare, and serve meals. It has been so wonderful to see the variety of ways the food bank serves their community.

Lunch Fellowship

by Emma Wiering | June 14, 2023 2:45 PM

The group of us at the Kenai foodbank have been given the opportunity each day to eat with the community members who come here for their meal. It has been truly one of the most amazing parts about this ministry for us. We have been able to talk to and build relationships with so many individuals who come here. Through this we have been able to share about God, share our stories, and also hear about others stories and hardships.  It has been such a growing experience and a blessing for all of us.

Moose Hunt

by Alissa Danielson | June 17, 2023 1:41 PM

By Tuesday evening we had only seen one moose so we decided to take it to the road and find a moose! We ended up seeing 7 moose! We prayed in faith we would see a moose, and also played Watermelon Man which we know helped call the moose into view.

AEC at AEC

by Alissa Danielson | June 17, 2023 1:44 PM

Our projects on Wednesday at AEC included continuing to chop down trees, doing yard work at the training center, sorting old tires, cleaning one of the cabins to get it ready for guests, and a dump run!

We Saw a Bear!!

by Alissa Danielson | June 17, 2023 1:47 PM

On Wednesday evening we went on a hike and although the trail was heavily populated with mosquitoes, it was worth it because… we saw a bear! It was a baby bear that was climbing into a tree so we  chose to give it some space in case the mama bear was close.

Canoeing on Skilak

by Alissa Danielson | June 17, 2023 1:50 PM

On Thursday we took time to enjoy the beauty of Alaska by canoeing on gorgeous Skilak Lake. The large lake was calm and the views were beautiful!

Last Night of VBS

by Alissa Danielson | June 17, 2023 1:59 PM

Thursday night we prepared one final meal for VBS volunteers and their families, and participated in VBS for one more night. We are so honored that Peninsula Grace invited us into their incredible ministry this week. They had a record number of kids attend VBS this week, and we praise God for the eternal impact made on the lives of kids and their families through VBS.

Praying for Pastor Danny & PG

by Alissa Danielson | June 17, 2023 2:04 PM

Before we left Soldotna on our journey back to Anchorage, we took a moment to thank God for Pastor Danny and the partnership we have with Peninsula Grace.

Some of us visited our first National Park, Kenai Fjords National Park! We did a 2 mile loop hike up to the beautiful Exit Glacier!

Portage Lake

by Alissa Danielson | June 17, 2023 2:08 PM

We also made a stop at Portage Lake, which was a favorite spot of our team last year. We skipped rocks and enjoyed looking at more glaciers! Creation is beautiful, and we thank the Creator for these beautiful gifts.

Goodbye, Pelicans!

by Alissa Danielson | June 17, 2023 2:12 PM

Saying goodbye to our PPM staff at the airport reminds us that the end of our trip is really just the beginning. We are ready to take in the challenge of continuing to walk in obedience and shine the light of Christ back home.

AEC, we love you! Thank you for an incredible week and for loving Jesus most. — Alissa & Emma
