Belmont's Beginning

by Jacob Kauranen | March 4, 2023 9:26 PM

Belmont University's team arrived safely in Washington DC today. The PPM team and Hughes United Methodist Church are excited to partner with them to serve the local community this week. Please pray for the team to be a light to others and show the love of Jesus to each other and all those we encounter throughout the week. We appreciate all of you back home supporting us.

We are blessed to join Hughes United Methodist Church for its service this morning. We are excited to join their congregation in a bilingual service and worship God together.

DC Day

by Jacob Kauranen | March 5, 2023 9:08 PM

After the morning service, Hughes hosted us and the church for lunch. They made delicious pasta and meatballs and we got to have friendly conversations with many of their members. It was a blessing to talk with their diverse community and see how God is working in their lives. After lunch, we had the opportunity to drive to downtown DC and spend time together visiting monuments. The day provided many experiences to help us grow closer as a team and see God at work. God provided us with an amazing parking spot. We then saw the Washington Monument, World War II Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Korean War Veterans Memorial, Martin Luther King Jr Memorial, and the White House. It was amazing to see the rich history of our country and honor all those who fought for our freedom. After visiting the monuments we grabbed ice cream and then dinner at food trucks. We ate together and enjoyed the sunset and the beauty of God's creation. After eating we visited David's Tent and were able to worship, pray, and talk with those running the ministry. It was amazing to see their heart for providing night-and-day worship and being a light to others and sharing the love of Christ and the gospel. After visiting David's Tent we returned back to the church, and are now ready to work on the projects they have for us in the upcoming days.

Praying With David's Tent

by Jacob Kauranen | March 5, 2023 9:31 PM

David's Tent said they had been praying for Tennessee, which is where our group from Belmont is based. They offered to pray for us before we left and that is when this photo was taken.

Church Cleaning Commence

by Jacob Kauranen | March 6, 2023 8:58 PM

Today we were able to clean out several rooms in Hughes' attic. There was a lot of doubt that our team could finish the cleaning today, but God provided us with the strength and teamwork to finish all of the work before dinner. It was as if God told those who doubted, "O ye of little faith."

Lip-Smacking Lunch

by Jacob Kauranen | March 6, 2023 9:13 PM

Lunch was a much-needed break from our hard manual labor, and the cooks prepared for us some absolutely delicious soup. I mean who didn't go back for seconds?

Dinner and Diana

by Jacob Kauranen | March 6, 2023 9:41 PM

After wrapping up cleaning the attic, we were able to eat scrumptious chicken fajitas with Pastora and other people from the church. It was amazing to hear Diana share more about her story, her heart for her church and community, and how God is using her at Hughes.

Fully Rely On God

by Jacob Kauranen | March 6, 2023 9:46 PM

After taking our necessary showers, we spent the rest of the night shopping at Giant, Target, and Dollar Tree. We also grabbed frozen yogurt at sweetFrog. It was the cherry on top of the busy and memorable day.

How Did You See Jesus Today?

by Jacob Kauranen | March 7, 2023 7:26 PM

Today we saw Jesus at work as we worked with Hughes' food distribution they do every Tuesday. It was a blessing to give and receive love as we gave food to many people in need. This is a picture of the girls packing up vegetables in the preparation for the distribution.

by Jacob Kauranen | March 7, 2023 7:49 PM

A great and mighty work of God always starts with prayer. Here Pastora Diana prays for the food distribution before we begin.

by Jacob Kauranen | March 7, 2023 7:55 PM

After we prayed, we began serving others. It was amazing to see the kindness and smiles of the people we helped. Even though they needed love and support shown to them, they showed us it in return.

Long Line, Longer Impact

by Jacob Kauranen | March 7, 2023 8:02 PM

Today we were able to make an impact, not because of what we did, but because of what God did through us.

White As Snow

by Jacob Kauranen | March 7, 2023 8:18 PM

After lunch and some more fellowship with Hughes' workers, we began to clean and paint an upstairs storage room. We reapplied a coat of white to the walls. It was a reminder that Jesus has washed our sins away and now they are white as snow (Isaiah 1:18).

Strong Scavengers

by Jacob Kauranen | March 7, 2023 8:47 PM

Lastly, we were able to help someone load up the scrap metal we had saved from cleaning the attic the day prior. God gave us another day of hard work and many blessings. We are excited about what the rest of the week will hold, and how God will continue to use us.

Martha's Mission

by Jacob Kauranen | March 8, 2023 8:18 PM

Today we were able to volunteer to help Martha's Table, and partner with them in helping hundreds of families in Washington DC get the food they need.

Martha's Workers

The rest of the team headed to the Museum of the Bible. Is the logo supposed to look like a sideways B, an open Bible, or the ten commandments? Maybe the spies could have found out.

Pajama Party with Pastora?

Pastoa has been a wonderful encouragement and a great person to partner with this week. We can not give her enough thanks for all that she did for our team.

Bread and Butterflies

by Jacob Kauranen | March 9, 2023 9:39 PM

When in Washington DC going to museums is your bread and butter. Today we all started at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. Seeing God's creation such as mammals, bugs, rocks, and butterflies brought joy to the group. Justin was especially joyous to see the butterflies. Seeing him in the butterfly room was one of the highlights of the trip.

Some of us split off from the group to explore the National Gallery of Art. It was awesome to see some amazing art, but also super-talented painters working on recreations of the art.

Adventure Is Out There

by Jacob Kauranen | March 9, 2023 10:04 PM

Sadly there was no Up house in the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, but we still had an adventure. The planetarium was awesome-it may have put some people to sleep with how awesome it was. It was crazy to see and learn about all the modern innovations we have had to allow us to travel through the air and outer space. Even people such as Jerrie Cobb, a woman pilot who became a missionary in South America.

Museum Hopping

by Jacob Kauranen | March 9, 2023 10:28 PM

The other places we visited as a group or subgroups were the Hirshhorn Museum, The National Archives Museum, and the National Museum of American History. Many steps were gained, many things were learned, and many books were bought. It was a pleasure spending the day with all of you in DC, touring all the museums, and hopping from one to the other.

The Lord Is My Rock

by Jacob Kauranen | March 9, 2023 10:39 PM

I am going to slide this picture in here of Isabella with a rock to remind us that God is our rock, our fortress, our deliverer, our strength, in whom we trust, our buckler, the horn of our salvation, and our high tower (Psalm 18:2).

Full Platter

by Jacob Kauranen | March 9, 2023 10:54 PM

We finished our last night together with a meal at Nando's, a shopping trip at Giant, showers at LA Fitness, and a team meeting. It was great to fellowship and bond with one another as we gathered around the table for dinner one last time. The whole chicken was conquered too.

Two Words, One Week

by Jacob Kauranen | March 9, 2023 11:09 PM

The list of words that our team used to describe this week is the following: impactful, immersed, eye-opening, surprising, invigorated, completeness, beautiful, aware, pioneering, expanding, heart-warming, stretching, joyful, unexpected, big, inspiring, fullness, and supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.

Nobody Knows

by Jacob Kauranen | March 10, 2023 11:31 PM

On our final morning, we enjoyed breakfast together, packed up, and said our goodbyes.

Belmont University's 2023 group was the first group I led. You always remember your first, and this was my first trip as an Assistant Trip Leader. God surely blessed me with the most amazing group of people during this week. I sincerely thank you from the bottom of my heart Bella, Celia, Isabella, Justin, Lydia, Madeleine, and Malikai. I will never forget all of you and if you need a friend, someone to talk to, or any help in the future do not hesitate to reach out. The truth is the hardest thing to say is goodbye. Here are some lyrics from Nobody Knows by The Lumineers that fit our parting.

"Nobody knows how to say goodbye

It seems so easy 'til you try

Then the moments passed you by

Nobody knows how to say goodbye"

I am praying for each and every one of you as we go our separate ways. I hope God will pour out His blessings upon your life. Seek first the kingdom of God, draw nigh unto Him, and love God with all that you are. If you can do this everything else will fall into place in your life.
