Amazing Grace

by Morgan Shepherd | June 13, 2022 12:42 PM

Sunday morning, we got to attend church service at our host church, Our Savior Lutheran. It was cool to experience a service with many differences from our own and still be worshipping the same God!

After the service, we ate lunch and got to talk with Hannah, the Director of Church Ministries, about some questions we had regarding the service.

Worshipping 24/7

by Morgan Shepherd | June 13, 2022 1:45 PM

Our first stop on our exploration of the National Mall was David’s Tent, which is a 24/7 worship tent. There is always at least one person leading worship in this tent, which is open for people to come and go as they please. This was a favorite stop of ours, we really enjoyed listening to the music and seeing other people come and worship too.

You Can’t Miss It

by Morgan Shepherd | June 13, 2022 1:56 PM

The Washington Monument can be seen from many places all over the city, so it was really cool to actually see it up close!

Covering the City in Prayer

by Morgan Shepherd | June 13, 2022 2:02 PM

We wrapped up our monument/memorial exploration by spending intentional time in prayer over the city, the leaders of our country, and whatever else on our hearts. We are so thankful for the freedom we have to worship and pray without fear of persecution.

A Pandastic Day!

by Morgan Shepherd | June 13, 2022 9:04 PM

This morning, we went to the Smithsonian National Zoo. We had a blast seeing the animals, especially the pandas, orangutans, and the monkeys with upside-down handlebar mustaches! It’s so cool how many animals God created and how diverse and unique they are!

Sunny Afternoon of Kid’s Ministry!

by Abigail Lapp | June 13, 2022 9:19 PM

This afternoon, we got to spend time leading worship, playing games, and doing crafts with kids in the childcare program at Our Savior. We loved connecting with the kids and are excited to see them again tomorrow!

Trusting in God’s Plan

by Abigail Lapp | June 13, 2022 9:22 PM

Today at Kid’s Ministry, Pastor Troy taught about King Saul and the importance of trusting in God’s sovereign plan. We are looking forward to many more valuable lessons this week!

Rice to Meet You!

by Abigail Lapp | June 14, 2022 9:26 PM

Today we served with our friends at Hughes United Methodist Church doing food distribution! Some students stood outside and helped people register (through language barriers!) while others distributed rice, produce, pasta, and other food inside the church. We loved striking up conversations and helping out with the amazing mission at Hughes!

Kind of Like Grocery Shopping

by Morgan Shepherd | June 16, 2022 8:37 AM

We had tables set up with a variety of foods and people could come in and choose a certain amount of items they would like based on the size of their families.

The Counsel of the Lord Stands Forever

by Morgan Shepherd | June 16, 2022 9:06 AM

Tuesday, we talked about David and Jonathon with the kids. We sang songs, made some crafts, and had a lot of fun! Our memory verse for the day was Psalm 33:11.

Is the Prize Popeye’s?

by Morgan Shepherd | June 17, 2022 5:36 PM

Throughout the week, we had the kids memorize different bible verses and told them we would give them a prize if they came back the next day and recited it. The kids were very excited and asked if the prize was Popeye’s Chicken. That wasn’t the prize, but it became a joke between us and the kids and so we decided to surprise them with the chicken on our last day together. The kids were so excited and it was so fun to surprise them!

High Five for Jesus

by Morgan Shepherd | June 17, 2022 5:40 PM

We had so much fun with the kids this week. Saying goodbyes were bittersweet, but we will continue to keep them in our thoughts and prayers and hope that some seeds were planted in their lives.

Distribución de Alimentos

by Morgan Shepherd | June 18, 2022 12:47 PM

Thursday morning, we helped out with another food distribution! This one was community led and in the middle of apartment complexes. The leader had a microphone to give a little message while the people waited in line, and there was a kids area for the kids to do crafts and play. We got to help in both areas which was a blast, even through the Spanish/English language barrier! So much food was handed out and it was a blessing to be the hands and feet.

Fruit Loop Necklaces

by Morgan Shepherd | June 18, 2022 12:50 PM

We met some really cute kids and had a lot of fun playing with them and helping them with their crafts! We even did some of the dances we’ve been doing throughout the week with them.

Water Bottles & Prayers

by Morgan Shepherd | June 18, 2022 12:56 PM

In the afternoon, we went to the Union Station in DC to do homeless ministry. We broke up into groups and walked around the areas surrounding the Union Station passing out water bottles and talking to the people we met. It was a new experience for most of us, but we enjoyed meeting people, hearing their stories, and praying for them! When we met back up at the Union Station, we got to go on our first metro ride to get to dinner!

Cotton-Eye Joe

by Morgan Shepherd | June 18, 2022 12:59 PM

We loved taking the metro! One ride was particularly empty, so we may or may not have done a little dancing...

Finishing Off the Week

by Morgan Shepherd | June 18, 2022 11:42 PM

We ended our trip with a visit to Arlington National Cemetery. We got to see the changing of the guard for the tomb of the unknown soldier, JFK’s tomb, and rows and rows and rows of headstones for people that fought  for our freedom. It was a somber and eye opening experience.

We are so thankful for this great week and we said bittersweet goodbyes before hopping on the plane to go home. Until next time!
