We made it to Tuscon!

by Emma Wiering | March 11, 2023 7:58 PM

We have made it to Tucson after a long day of travel! We were welcomed by our praying pelican staff at Northwest Community Friends church. We are excited to get to meet the congregation we will be serving!

Prayer over Tuscon

by Emma Wiering | March 13, 2023 3:41 PM

After we got settled at our host church, we went to “A” mountain. Here we took time to look out over the city and pray for the community, our week, and the ministry we will be doing. We’re excited to start at our ministry sites and get to share the love of Jesus.

Morning Devotions

by Emma Wiering | March 13, 2023 3:44 PM

We have been starting off our days with a morning devotion. Our host church has this area behind the building with this cross. We have been using this time to talk to the Lord and remind ourselves why we are here and who we are serving.

Greetings!!

by Emma Wiering | March 13, 2023 3:47 PM

As the congregation members arrived on Sunday morning, our students gave them big welcomes. They lined up at the doors making sure to greet everyone along with walking to cars and assisting everyone. Some members even shared it’s the most welcomed they’ve ever felt. Then we went into the church and participated in their morning prayer time. A fantastic worship and service then followed.

Great Fellowship

by Emma Wiering | March 13, 2023 3:50 PM

After church, the congregation make us Sonoran Dogs! A Tuscon specialty, a hot dog wrapped in bacon, on a Sonoran bun, loaded with various taco toppings. This time created such wonderful fellowship between our team and the church members. We shared such wonderful conversations, connections, and stories with one another.

Pima Canyon

by Emma Wiering | March 13, 2023 3:53 PM

To end out our Sunday, we took another hike-this time at Pima Canyon. As we reached the end of the hike, we took another time to really just intentionally pray for the city. After our fellowship time, we now understand more specific needs to pray for along with specific people to pray for. We find such great importance in setting up our week with prayer and really just being in God's presence.

Diggin!

by Emma Wiering | March 13, 2023 3:58 PM

Today we started working on our projects!! One of our projects was digging trenches along the parking lot. Then we placed railroad ties in the trenches and made the surface level with dirt. The church is then going to be making a sidewalk along the parking lot.

Painting Projects

While some of our team worked in the parking lots, other tackled painting the sheds!  There are a few sheds on the property that were in need of a paint job. We were able to tackle painting two of them.

Soccer Camp and Community

by Emma Wiering | March 13, 2023 10:22 PM

This afternoon we truly saw God working through this community. At the soccer camp we helped run, we had 45 kids who were all so excited to be here. We talked to many parents and heard many of their stories and testimonies. Many of us felt so touched by the children and families we met today. We are so excited for another day of camp tomorrow.

Turn up the Heat!

by Emma Wiering | March 14, 2023 1:09 PM

Today a group of us worked on clearing out the paths and fire pit around the cross at the church. We burned and moved lots of brush out of this area. The hopes with cleaning out this area is to make it a great place to commune. It helps shed a spotlight on this cross that the community will want to take a moment and rest at to take time with God.

Finishing the Parking Lot

by Emma Wiering | March 15, 2023 8:42 PM

On Tuesday we finished leveling the dirt and gravel in the parking lot. This took lots of man power but we were able to finish the project! This helped make this project a lot more attainable for the church. The end goal is for the side walk to go on top of the gravel.

Soccer Camp!!

by Emma Wiering | March 15, 2023 8:46 PM

On Tuesday and Wednesday we had more of our soccer camp. We were so amazed to see the community come out for this event. We so greatly enjoyed seeing all of these kids and families come together. It was wonderful to see God work through this whole team as we coached these kids.

Gospel Rescue Mission!

by Emma Wiering | March 15, 2023 10:27 PM

This morning we were able to go to gospel rescue mission. Here we were able to help this ministry prepare a bit for their big Easter hand out, where they are able to give back so much to the community on a special day. We also created hundreds of hygiene kits to be distributed. This ministry is so heartwarming and refreshing to see how hard they work to serve all those in need in the Tuscon area. It was such a special time to see and hear about this program.

Pricing!

by Emma Wiering | March 15, 2023 10:33 PM

This morning another part of our team went to Gap warehouse. Their ministry centers around “standing in the gap for widows and orphans.” Here the girls priced various items in their warehouse. Lots and lots of price tags.

All the Boxes!!

by Emma Wiering | March 15, 2023 10:36 PM

Also at gap warehouse, the men worked on the boxes. All morning they collapsed boxes, and boxes, and more boxes. This helped the warehouse a lot by being able to get these out of the way. We also enjoyed a tour of the warehouse and a very moving testimony by one of the workers. It’s just a reminder of all the ways God works and appears all throughout our day.

Community Cookout!

by Emma Wiering | March 15, 2023 10:39 PM

To end out our awesome week of soccer camp, we invited all of the children and their families back to the church. Here we had the pleasure of hosting a community cookout. We had dinner, ice cream, a bounce house, and of course fellowship. It was such a sweet way to end this weeks ministry. We will miss all of these wonderful kiddos that we connected so strongly with.

Rec Day!

by Emma Wiering | March 17, 2023 11:13 AM

Thursday was rec day! We did a short scenic walk/ hike in Sabino canyon. It was so great to see some more areas around Tuscon! Along the way we found this dam/ waterfall that we had fun playing at. Then we enjoyed lunch at an authentic Mexican restaurant!
