Pastor Testimony:
Pastor Omar is originally from Granada, Nicaragua. He immigrated to Costa Rica more than 30 years ago. He is married to María José and they have two children, María Celeste and Omar Samuel. For work reasons, in 2001 he moved to a town an hour and a half away from this family during the week, but the culture was faith based and his coworkers shared their knowledge of Christ. One night at his workplace, he accepted salvation and turned his life over to God. Soon after, his wife was saved. They knew very little, but it was enough to share it and so they did. Little by little their extended families were being reached by the Lord because the promises in the Lord are fulfilled "you and your house will be saved". He served as a youth pastor for 6 years and was then called to be the pastor of the church where they currently serve. He also serves with the national leadership for the Mennonite churches of Costa Rica.
Meet the church:
Menonita Shekina
Iglesia Menonita Shekina is a community of faith located in the center of Upala. The congregation was organically formed in the early 1960s by North American Mennonites as they collaborated in different ways with the community and the church grew as they served alongside their neighbors, assisting them with their crops. At that time, a plague attacked the cocoa plantations, which the majority of the community planted, and together, the workers and missionaries helped combat the disaster of the failed crop. It was this moment in time that cemented a foundation of service within their culture as a church. Being in a border area, immigrants are common and often knock on our door and ask us for a bite of food, help with transportation and sometimes spiritual guidance. There are many people who are downcast, exhausted, and they need to be ministered to by the Lord. Now there is a great transit of Venezuelans, Africans and Haitians to the region. The church desires to love and minister to all.
