We made it!

by Nathan Monseth | June 8, 2017 4:21 PM

Brief updated as we settle in to get some rest: Hallelujah! We made it!!  The team landed with smiles in Accra and arrived in Frankadua just after sunset. It was a long day of travel, but we are here and so excited to serve! We had the chance to meet the students and hosts here at the school and now we are settling in for some much needed rest. Internet is challenging, but we hope to post pictures tomorrow. Thank you for your prayers!!

We made it!

Day 2!

by Nathan Monseth | June 9, 2017 6:56 PM

Day 2 - Our first full day in Ghana was full!  After breakfast, the team commissioned the building project.  Joined by a group of native craftsmen, we cleared brush, piled rocks, mixed cement, built ramps and poured floors! The team also visited all of the school sessions and even participated in some fashion designing.  After a delicious lunch of fish, rice and oranges, the team rested up for the evening ministry: cinema evangelism.  In preparation for a new church starting this Sunday, the team mingled in Juapong's market square.  While some of us setup the movie with our drivers and evangelists, others rode in the cinema van through the village streets announcing the evening's event.  Hundreds came and about thirty decided to follow Jesus! Pray for the them to join us on Sunday. Pray for us as we prepare for children's ministry at the church site tomorrow. It will be another full day of ministry here in Ghana!

Day 2!

Let the little children come!

by Nathan Monseth | June 10, 2017 5:39 PM

After a good nights rest, the team drove into the town of Frankadua for children's ministry.  With an 8am start time under the shaded trees, we were greeted by a handful of kids and a game of "pickup football" (aka soccer).  Their game actually started at 5am! We jumped right into kids ministry and it was a good decision.  The children's group quintupled in size and soon we were singing the hippo song and sharing the love of Jesus through the story of Zacchaeus.  The invitation to those without a church was given to join us Sunday morning for the start of First Baptist Church of Juapong!

Lunch of chicken and fried yams was followed by a short rest back at our lodging. The work on building the classroom at the Vocational school continued and the floors are finished. A few on the team enjoyed a refreshing gentle rain before we jumped back in the vans for visitation and prayer in Frankadua.  Without cinema evangelism tonight, extra rest will prepare us for a full day at the new church as well as another one tomorrow.  Thanks for your comments.  They are shared at our daily team meetings.  P.S.  Happy Anniversary, Amy!

Day 4 - The Day of the Lord

by Nathan Monseth | June 11, 2017 3:59 PM

(Note: Internet was down today so this update came via text and was updated Stateside for the team. Pics to come when Internet is back up!)

"I was glad when they said to me, 'Let us go to the house of the Lord.'"  During our team meeting tonight, many shared about their experience this morning at First Baptist Church of Juapong, named in honor of our team. The work of the Holy Spirit was clearly evident as songs, testimonies, and prayers surrounded a powerful message on the return of Christ.  From 8am until noon, the congregation grew from a handful to hundreds.

After lunch the energized team ventured out on rugged roads to a remote church.  The joy of the children was contagious as the team blew bubbles, built bracelets and bounced balls.  The story of Noah brought the whole village together as the promises of God were presented.  In conclusion, the Good News of Jesus was shared through a game of "Four Corners" and the song "I'm in Love with the King."

As evident in the meeting tonight, this team is in love with the King and His creation here in Ghana.

Thanks again for your encouragement and prayers. Classroom construction continues at 7am tomorrow!

Our God Reigns

by James Noreen | June 12, 2017 3:47 PM

Rumbling thunder greeted our team as rain moved in for most of the day. Construction postponed, our schedule shifted to God's schedule with extra time around the breakfast table. Cornflakes and corny jokes led to games followed by a culinary practicum with the students.  Although we didn't stay the entire time, the fourth year student presentations lasted the whole day! Mid-morning, an American missionary at the vocational school shared her story as well as the story of Ghana's outlawed trokosi practice (Google to learn more.) Living here since November, Rovaughna Richardson not only teaches at the school but conducts one-on-one counseling sessions with those ransomed from slavery.  Following lunch, we hiked up a path to a little resort with a beautiful view of the school grounds.

New classroom construction continued in the afternoon with framing the windows and doors.  The whole team plans to try building again at 7am tomorrow.

Another highlight today was our team meeting.  Each day we gather for worship, scripture, sharing and prayer. With a light rain still falling, we sat in the courtyard sharing how God has revealed Himself to us.  Each member conveyed a message that could be summarized with "our God reigns."    Rain or shine pray that we will continue to seek His will and His ways!

Day 6: Who Is Building the Classrooms?

by Nathan Monseth | June 13, 2017 8:40 PM

God's plans are always higher than our plans.  Instead of physically building the classroom at 7am, we first asked God to build it.  In a large circle, we prayed in one of the classrooms (hoping to finish by Thursday!) for the students, teachers, school and country.  "Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain..."  Then the entire team formed an assembly line and concrete block after concrete block was brought into the classrooms.  God is faithful and allowed us to accomplish much in partnership with our Ghanaian brothers and sisters.

Later that morning, relationships deepened with the "first year" students as our team girls played card games and Twister.

In the afternoon and evening, we returned to Mpakadam, the village we first visited on Sunday afternoon.  Lots of games led to the story of David and Goliath.  Cheering erupted when the giant (aka Jon) fell to the ground.  The team reminded the kids that God is greater than anything and anyone.

Then we supported the cinema evangelism team during a movie with about 300 people in attendance.  Many made commitments to follow Jesus. Pray for them.  Thanks for praying for us too!

Day 7: Pray Without Ceasing

by Nathan Monseth | June 14, 2017 5:02 PM

Gathering in the second classroom under construction at 7am, our team asked God to raise up leaders at this school and in this country who would bring glory to God.  Many of the students at the vocational school are working long hours in preparation for their final presentations.  Pray.

The weekly chapel combined our team with the students in praise and testimony.  Joe and Madison shared words of encouragement followed by a sermon by Arthur.  He challenged us to not just bring others to Christ but mentor them in the faith.  Pray.

Later, Reverend Immanual took us to an elementary school where students learn academic skills and receive biblical training.  After splitting up the team and teaching in eight classrooms, we met with the faculty and heard about the successes as well as the challenges they face - foremost only one working computer for 330 students!  Pray.

Although we made it to our final night of kids' ministry, rains cancelled the last cinema night.  Instead Rovaughna Richardson, the American missionary mentioned earlier, welcomed all 22 of us into her home for dinner.  There is much work to be done in Juapong.  Pray.

Thank you to all of you have been following along with us and praying as we serve here in Ghana! We have one more full day tomorrow before flying out Friday night. Continue to pray that God would use us for His purposes!!

Day 8's Journal (Thursday) - Goodbye for Now

by Nathan Monseth | June 16, 2017 2:29 PM

From sunup to well past sundown, our team spent the day with our African friends.  While our girls spent the morning playing games and braiding hair with the first year students, our boys took on the male students in "football" and basketball.

Due to a couple of rainy days, the goal to finish two classrooms this week is now next week's goal.  Pictures of the completion should soon be posted on the Baptist Vocational Training Center's Facebook page.

After lunch, with much encouragement from locals to enjoy the beauty of Ghana, we left for the Volta Hotel.  Swimming, boat rides and a unforgettable buffet led up to our final team meeting.  Overlooking a hydroelectric dam powering the entire country, we sang, wrote letters and shared about God's amazing work in our lives and the lives around us.   In conclusion, we prayed that God would continue the work He  began through us.

With breakfast in our bellies, we leave tomorrow morning for Accra where we will tour the GBC (Ghana Baptist Convention) headquarters, eat lunch at a popular restaurant, and explore the capital city a bit.  Before heading to the airport, we hope to join GBC's president, Reverend Ernest, for dinner and closing remarks.

To everyone back in Bedford, Indiana, you have wonderful group of people our family has enjoyed leading.  May God bless your church as you reconnect and encourage your new "daughter" congregation, First Baptist Church of Juapong.

Because of the Love of Jesus,

Headed to the airport!

We are so pleased with the work you all are doing for Christ!!! The pictures showing the excitement of the kids has to be encouraging for you all. I thought about a song we sang when I was a teen (many moons ago) about turning back to that time when you first asked Jesus to be your savior and that excitement of that "First Love", and to remember to keep turning back to the "First Love". I'm sure there are a lot of firsts for you all as a team and as individuals, but think of that first love that is being found by those you are ministering to. Thank you and thank God for you all and the work you are doing.
