Arrivals!

by Jon Nelson | March 15, 2014 12:44 PM

Our Praying Pelican staff is eagerly awaiting in Jamaica for our teams to arrive! We received news this afternoon that one team will be delayed until 5:10pm. This is the flight group on Delta # 727. We have made arrangements and changed transportation plans to accommodate the late arrival. The other two flights are scheduled to arrive on time around 2pm. Once we arrive this afternoon we'll be heading out to the Nutshell Conference Center, our home for the week. We'll be getting settled in, grab dinner, and be ready to serve God this week! We'll try to post an update later tonight or early tomorrow to let you all know how things are going. Thanks for your prayers for our team, staff, local leaders, and those who we'll minister with and to in Jamaica this week!

Asbury Jamaica trip 2014!

by Jon Nelson | March 15, 2014 11:53 PM

We've begun! Our team is off and running. The last of us arrived in Jamaica around 6pm and we enjoyed our first Jamaican dinner of our trip! Chicken of course! The team is all doing well. After dinner we spent time in small groups and worship while spiritually preparing for our ministry and time here this week. Some of the boys of course decided to climb on the water storage tank. One of them slipped and fell on a pipe and busted it, damaging our much needed water source that everyone uses for showers, etc as the water is pumped to the lodging facility from the storage tank. Rest assured, Andy Eldemire, our bus driver, assistant leader, and general "handy man" had it fixed in about 15 minutes! Tomorrow we'll be worshiping and spending time in fellowship with our Jamaican church partners and friends. We will spend time in communities doing some evangelism and outreach and will have the opportunity to share our faith with others and the reason we're in Jamaica. It'll be an earlier evening tomorrow so we can catch up on more rest of the busy week ahead! More updates to come!

Sunday

by Jon Nelson | March 16, 2014 7:10 PM

Most of our team was out and about today in the communities where we're serving this week. We spent time praying for the communities, praying for residents and people, and inviting people to church.

Learning!!

by Jon Nelson | March 16, 2014 7:11 PM

Pastor Devere Nugent, Leon Jackson, and Hughroy Jackson share with us about the history and culture of Jamaica. We learned a ton about William Knibb, the town of Falmouth, and the abolition of slavery today. Hughroy Jackson gave us some information about what one of our teams will be working on tomorrow for the work project part of the day!

Harvest Service

by Jon Nelson | March 16, 2014 7:13 PM

It was Harvest Thanksgiving Service at the William Knibb Baptist Church today. Church members brought the first fruits of their crops to the church and the church will cook meals and sell them tomorrow to local schools. Here's a picture of some of the produce sitting in the church during service.

Finishing our afternoon

by Jon Nelson | March 16, 2014 7:14 PM

A couple of our teams wrap up our ministry today outside of the Martha Brae Baptist Church. Right now we're in small groups and will be getting ready for worship later this evening. David Read has arrived, he was our last remaining team member. We're all doing great! Looking forward to our time in the schools tomorrow!

Monday's Reality

by Brent Kirk | March 17, 2014 10:27 PM

Today was a big day for the team. Although much had been accomplished over the weekend such as arrival, worship services at local churches, and prayer walks throughout the communities in which the team would be serving. Today, the reality of why the team has come to Jamaica was discovered or should I say felt. Teams served in local Primary Schools in the morning hours reading to students, playing games with them as well as presenting the students with Biblical lessons. The students loved it and many friendships were made instantly. Teams then spent the afternoon hours mixing concrete, passing buckets, laying blocks, painting and so much more. Everyone did an awesome job serving today and they are looking forward to tomorrow, but for tonight, I believe they will sleep very well after a very long and hot day.

Special Messenger

by Brent Kirk | March 18, 2014 10:46 PM

The entire team was blessed tonight as Pastor Devere Nugent of the William Knibb Memorial Baptist Church came and delivered an awesome message. The message was so compelling that you could here a pin drop! I know, you are having a hard time imagining 130 students all sitting together in a small space and hearing silence! Several students also shared "God Moments" during our worship time together. What are "God Moments?" Simply moments when students see God moving somehow. Some of those moments included other students, community people they came into contact with or staff members and team leaders that stood out and made a personal impact on a student or group. Regardless of who was being spoke about, humility was at the forefront of the receiver. What an awesome day of discovery, bonding, ministering and loving! I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.

Do You Believe in Miracles...

by Brent Kirk | March 19, 2014 10:55 PM

It never gets old hearing the stories of how Jesus moves! Each night during group worship Todd asks the students to share any "God Moments" that they may have seen or experienced during the day. Tonight, students again shared many awesome stories of how they saw God's handy work taking place in peoples lives. Students shared stories of their visit to an Infirmary today and how they ministered to the residents but also how they were ministered too by the residents. The students were able to pray with those who were blind, lame, sickly, and broken. They prayed with those who do not believe and shared scripture with many residents. One of the residents who goes by the name of Brooklyn and is blind, had 7 boys mesmerized as he sat on a small pail and "preached"the gospel for more than 20 minutes. It was awesome to see them so intensely engaged. And then, a man who was prayed over by several of the students, because he had severe issues with his voice and congestion, immediately after the prayer and as the amen's were said, he shouted out in song. We are reminded "the prayers of the righteous brings much healing..." A very good day! Keep praying for your team- God is using them in mighty ways! As I am writing this I am hearing two students praying for one another and sharing their struggles! Is God awesome or what!
