Here we are at the lodging site and getting a tour. The place we are staying is a historic building and was once a hardware store. There are many nooks and crannies to explore.
Surprising our Island Partners
by Leah Johnson | May 12, 2024 11:57 AM
Today we surprised Pastor Randy Dick and his wife Beth at Cobb Island Baptist Church. They have partnered with Praying Pelican Missions for the past 3 years. We listened to Pastor Randy’s message about Acts 10. He talked about God bringing Peter and Cornelius together in His perfect timing and perfect ways. It reminded us that God brings us pelicans together from all across the world to the right people at the right time!
The After-Church Photo
by Emma Peterson | May 12, 2024 12:08 PM
We took a photo with Pastor Randy and his wife Beth in front of the church. It truly was a blessing to visit with them and the congregation after the service. We even got a personal tour of the church and community. They are looking forward to serving with Praying Pelican Missions this summer!
A Trip to Arlington
by Leah Johnson | May 12, 2024 6:31 PM
Today was a beautiful and sunny day visiting Arlington National Cemetery. We saw the tomb of the unknown solider and saw the changing of the guards. Climbing up hills was worth it when we reached the Arlington house at the top of the hill. There was a view that overlooked Washington DC, giving us a clear view of many monuments!
“The Comfortable Couch”
by Emma Peterson | May 12, 2024 10:56 PM
We enjoyed a nice evening meal at Canes and hurried back to our lodging site to greet the other team joining us for the days of ministry! We were able to help them get situated. Afterwards, we rested on this “comfortable couch” to debrief the night and share our favorite parts of the day. Our answers included “the church we visited and the sermon, the island we got to see, the beauty of Arlington, and Canes”. We also had a nice chat about Crocs. Tomorrow we start the intentional ministry days!!
Offering a Hand
by Leah Johnson | May 13, 2024 9:45 AM
Today we are preparing to serve at Martha’s Table, a local nonprofit offering education, food, and opportunity. We are assisting in the daily market where members of the community can come and grab some fresh produce. This center is a beacon of hope in an area that is considered a “food desert”. There are only 3 grocery stores for 150,000 people! We are excited to serve!
Let us Tell you a Story…
by Leah Johnson | May 14, 2024 10:22 AM
This morning we are helping Ms. Sherrita at Kids Konnection. This is where we are lodging and today we sorted story boards. These are short series of photos that tell a story that has a Biblical lesson or truth about God behind it. The stories are written within the cultural context of their communities and are relatable for the kids and the struggles they face. These are used in the Sidewalk Sunday School ministry that Ms. Sherrita leads in surrounding neighborhoods every week.

The Gate Post
by Emma Peterson | May 15, 2024 9:19 AM
For all of today we are serving The Gate Post, which is where we have been lodging for the past week. Here Carlos is organizing through “story boards”. Story boards are used to connect real situations the youth in this community face to hopeful perspectives that point them back to God.
Joy, Joy, Joy!
by Leah Johnson | May 15, 2024 6:28 PM
Today we helped with Sidewalk Sunday School with Ms. Sherrita! There were games, songs, and a message delivered by Pastor Mike about God choosing us and setting us apart for His kingdom! Hannah made a new friend!
Go Team!

Museum of the Bible
by Emma Peterson | May 16, 2024 12:19 PM
Recreation Thursday! We got to explore the Museum of the Bible today. It was really interesting to see all the different types of Bibles. We also saw amazing visualizations of the Old Testament in a 30 minute walk through!
Food Trucks for Days
by Emma Peterson | May 17, 2024 8:44 AM
For lunch yesterday we stopped for food truck food! It is interesting to see so many food trucks in DC but most of them had the same meals. We got some quality corn dogs for lunch!
