Introducing Appalachia

by Rae Ann Barnett | August 21, 2023 2:04 PM

After attending services at Elkhorn First Baptist Church, we were able to explore the hills of Appalachia at the Breaks Interstate Park. We had a great afternoon exploring, hiking, and getting to know one another. Reviewing the plans for a week of service projects and ministry here is Eastern Kentucky- we are going to have a great week bringing the good news!

How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, “Your God reigns!” Isaiah 52:7

Late entry for Sunday- these beautiful mountains are not Internet friendly.

Splendor

by Rae Ann Barnett | August 21, 2023 2:16 PM

Luke 12:27-28 – “Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you

Planting this beautiful flower garden at the Marrowbone Missionary Baptist Church reminds of of the splendor of God’s creation. The detail He put into each flower and tree will be enjoyed by this community for the remainder of summer and fall.

2 Kings 22:5-6

Let them deliver it into the hand of the workmen who have the oversight of the house of the Lord, and let them give it to the workmen who are in the house of the Lord to repair the damages of the house, to the carpenters and the builders and the masons and for buying timber and hewn stone to repair the house.

Early Morning Project

by Rae Ann Barnett | August 22, 2023 12:07 PM

Up bright and early this morning to build a wheelchair ramp for a community member, this was not a planned project, but while at the church yesterday the pastor heard of the need. The men were able to go this morning and provide a safe entry to and from the house.

In the Kitchen

by Rae Ann Barnett | August 22, 2023 12:13 PM

Tari and Valle stayed behind to deep clean and reorganize the kitchen at the host site. Terry even blessed us with some of her delicious desserts- peanut butter pie, apple tart, and later today she’s going to make us a cheesecake!

Appal Action

by Rae Ann Barnett | August 23, 2023 8:40 PM

I can tell you the answer to the age old debate of how to pronounce Appalachia. It’s Appa-latch-a While watching a video with subtitles recently, the subtitles interpreted the heavy Appalachian accent as Apple Action. Well, this week we have certainly seen Apple Action. Today, the team emptied an old food pantry, cleaned the new site, and filled it up with food. This team has demonstrated Apple Action- love in action! The people that will receive the food in the coming weeks will certainly be blessed not only with food, but with our continued prayers. Oh! The men also started today digging a ditch- you can’t stop this team!

Floating down the River

by Rae Ann Barnett | August 25, 2023 10:00 PM

For our recreation day, we toured the Big Sandy Museum and learned about Appalachian history and the Hatfield and McCoy feud. After lunch at a local restaurant, we floated down the river. Spending time together this week has been great! We’ve created memories with new brothers and sisters in Christ.

Sunset

by Rae Ann Barnett | August 25, 2023 10:06 PM

The final sunset of our trip was magnificent! We can reflect on our week- working, fellowship, and rest. We came together as strangers and will leave as family. Praise God for this week of serving and ministry. Thank God for the new friends we’ve made along our journey. Continue to pray for the ministries and people in Southeastern Kentucky, pray that the seeds planted grow and flourish.
