We are Here!

by Heather Young | March 26, 2023 9:05 AM

We are so excited to be here in Puerto Rico! We arrived late last night, but after a full night's rest we are ready to enjoy church service this morning at Iglesia Bautista de Jerusalén. We believe that God will do great things this week!

Sunday Service

by Heather Young | March 26, 2023 1:54 PM

Today is Missions Sunday at Pastor Samuel's church. We are enjoying a translated message given by guest Pastor David about how we can be a missionary wherever we are. It is so wonderful to gather and worship together in English and Spanish!

Evening Meeting

by Heather Young | March 26, 2023 9:16 PM

Gia is leading our first devotional tonight all about love. This perfectly follows in line with the theme of church this morning. We are learning what love is and what it looks like to effectively love others. The Holy Spirit is working!

"In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us."

1 John 4:10‭-‬12

Assisting English Teachers

by Drema Jefferson | March 27, 2023 10:35 AM

This morning we divided into groups to assist the Art, PE, and English teachers at a middle school not far from the church. One group observed an English teacher teaching a poem to the kids by Emily Dickinson while the other group started interacting with the students in English.

We also got a chance to interact with the kids and play sports during their lunch hour. We had so much fun getting to know some of the kids.

Beautifying the Front of the School

by Drema Jefferson | March 27, 2023 10:43 AM

As part of the art teacher's wishes, we were able to start on a painting project in the front of the school. The beautiful colors were picked out by one of our amazing staff leaders, Maria Garcia.

Bible study with the youth of Iglesia Bautista Jerusalen and Hope Academy

by Drema Jefferson | March 27, 2023 9:19 PM

Tonight we joined forces with another team here on the island serving this week, as well as the youth of the church to have a competition over the book of Genesis. We had so much fun playing jeopardy and learning about the Bible in the process.

Afterwards, we spent some time hanging out with each other and getting to know the youth of the church.

Selfless Service

by Heather Young | March 28, 2023 11:02 AM

This is what true service looks like: picking up trash in the stands without being asked by the school. We are so thankful to be here and have the opportunity to show love just as God has loved us.

Buen Provecho!

by Heather Young | March 28, 2023 12:55 PM

The church and the school have been so hospitable to us as they provide good food for our meals every day. Each lunch at the school is made with so much love and joy. Because of this we say buen provecho, enjoy your meal!

Friendship Bracelets!

by Heather Young | March 28, 2023 5:44 PM

Georgia and Cece are teaching some of the 7th and 8th graders how to make friendship bracelets. This time in community is so special to have with other students of a similar but different culture to ours.

Souvenirs!

by Heather Young | March 28, 2023 5:49 PM

Before heading back to our lodging church, we stopped by a few nearby souvenir shops. What a great opportunity to support the local economy and also pick up a few gifts for our friends and family. We were also able to pray for one of the cashiers who said she was a member of the church where we are staying.

Happy Birthday, Courtney!

by Heather Young | March 28, 2023 7:27 PM

Today we are celebrating Courtney! We are so happy that she gets to experience her birthday in Puerto Rico this year. Cake and ice cream is a must! May God bless her for many more years to come.

Art Class!

by Heather Young | March 29, 2023 11:27 AM

This morning some of us are assisting with the eighth grade art class. Each student is assigned an artist to write about and then can choose a painting to copy onto paper and cardboard. We are practicing our Spanish and they are practicing their English!

New Leaves

by Heather Young | March 29, 2023 11:38 AM

Another group of us are touching up the cream paint on the benches of the school courtyard with the rest of the students in the art class. Once the cream paint is touched up, the students can repaint the leaves. The school is looking so beautiful.

During their breaks, we are teaching the students how to make friendship bracelets with yarn. They are also teaching us how to make some using rubber bands. The girls and boys are joining in!

Eighth Grade English Class

by Heather Young | March 29, 2023 11:47 AM

We are sitting in on a different English class today. The students are learning about urban legends and are practicing reading them out loud in English. After class, the teacher explained to us that she likes challenging the students to help ensure they are prepared for high school.

Growing Friendship

by Heather Young | March 29, 2023 12:07 PM

The friendship bracelets are becoming a very popular activity! Before lunch we have over 15 students learning how to make them with us. What a fulfilling time in community.

Teamwork!

by Heather Young | March 29, 2023 2:01 PM

We are working together to finish painting the benches and railings at the front of the school. Many hands make light work!

Finished!

by Heather Young | March 29, 2023 2:05 PM

A bunch of us worked hard to complete the painting project. The students told us that the school hasn't been re-painted in five years. The new color really gives new life to the school as the students enter and exit the building.

Lunch Staff

by Heather Young | March 29, 2023 2:59 PM

These are the wonderful ladies who have been serving lunch to us this week. We are so blessed to have been able to serve so well because of how much they have given to us. They wanted a photo to remember us by!

Hasta Luego!

by Heather Young | March 29, 2023 3:04 PM

Today is bittersweet as it is our last day at the school. The students were sad to see us go and we didn't want to leave. This group of seventh graders in particular asked us what a missionary is. We pray that through our actions this week we were able to minister to the hearts of those who don't know Jesus, and be His hands and feet in this one corner of the world.

by Heather Young | March 29, 2023 11:47 PM

Tonight we are blessed to be instructed by local farmers Eric and Eddy on how to salsa dance. So much fun and a great workout! When we finished we prayed over them and their ministry.
