We Made it to Alaska!

by Katrina Hulme | April 6, 2021 1:38 AM

After an early morning and long travel day, we finally arrived in Alaska! We had a delicious dinner of salmon and halibut burgers, and then stopped for these great views. The views continued on our drive up to Wasilla and then we settled into our home for the next two weeks. We can't wait to start serving tomorrow!

New Hope Compassionate Ministries

by Mel Trollman | April 6, 2021 1:54 PM

14 members of our group got to drive down into Anchorage this morning to connect with New Hope Compassionate Ministries. We got to offload a truck, as well as prep and bag food that will be handed out today to shut-ins and anyone else who needs it.

Breakfast Bags

by Katrina Hulme | April 6, 2021 1:55 PM

We are helping to pack a couple hundred breakfast bags at the local food pantry in Wasilla. These bags provide breakfast for kids over the weekend when they don't have access to school lunch.

Everybody loves cake!

by Mel Trollman | April 6, 2021 8:59 PM

Down at New Hope, every client that comes through the door receives a bag of food, a cake, and they could pick up a box or two of produce and dairy products from the truck outside on their way out. We've got to admit, some of these cakes were very tempting.

The importance of a warm greeting

by Mel Trollman | April 6, 2021 9:03 PM

This is a snapshot of the area where the food is distributed. There's a lot of spacing out between people currently, but no lack of human interaction. The regular staff that worked there new the people coming in by name and greeted them as friends. It was great for our team to get to see these relationships and be a part of this needed ministry for a day.

Spring cleaning

by Mel Trollman | April 6, 2021 9:06 PM

In addition to the food distribution at New Hope, we spread out and conquered! Our crew sorted through food, moved clothing, and cleaned from top to bottom. No toilets left unscrubbed, no crumbs left unswept! The regular staff and volunteers at New Hope were very appreciative.

Coffee, please!

by Mel Trollman | April 6, 2021 9:10 PM

Something unique about Alaska is the sheer number of coffee huts they have scattered on seemingly every main street. They're typically sheds or small stands that they put in easy to access parking lots. We didn't realize that Alaska had the most coffee consumement per capita until this trip. We decided to add to that statistic and stop at a hut ourselves on the way back to our lodging. Instead of driving up to the window, we were allowed to get out and order. Nothing like a hot cup of coffee on a winter day.

Unofficial Team Building

by Katrina Hulme | April 7, 2021 3:05 AM

No one said it would be easy... but no one said it would be this hard! We took on the Butte this evening and it was a feat. The hike up was muddy and steep, and the journey down was icy (& mostly on our butts). We laughed, worked as a team, and made some memories that will last a lifetime!

Dogsledding!

by Katrina Hulme | April 7, 2021 5:11 PM

We learned a lot about dog sledding and the Iditarod Race today! Dallas, the owner here, just won his fifth Iditarod Race two weeks ago. We got to meet the dogs and run a trail with the our own dog sled teams to! It was unforgettable!

Supermarket sweepstakes

by Mel Trollman | April 8, 2021 9:54 AM

On our way back from our dog sledding adventure, we made a pit stop at Walmart. Many of us found ourselves in the souvenir section debating which items should take up residency in our luggage going home.

Evening meetings

by Mel Trollman | April 8, 2021 10:03 AM

One of the last things we do each day is have a team meeting to process the experiences we shared that day, to worship and pray together, and to go over the plan for the next day. Wednesday evening, one of the Praying Pelican staff members shared a devotional with us based in the scripture 1 Peter 3:15. Ultimately we were challenged to be prepared to explain to people the source of light and joy within us in our interactions this week, which is the reason why we are here serving in Alaska.

Broomball with Aarigaa!

At Frontline today, we helped sort donations, restock the clothing closet, serve meals & groceries through the drive-through service line, and talked with one of the staff, Matthew!

Alaska Medical Missions

by Mel Trollman | April 12, 2021 2:54 AM

We served with a non-profit called Alaska Medical Missions in Anchorage. They take medical supplies and ship them all around the world. We went through supplies, sorting out the expired items and repackaged others.

Much work to do

by Mel Trollman | April 12, 2021 2:59 AM

We reached a good stopping point at the end of our day after unloading an entire connex (what alaskans call shipping containers). The other half of our team will come back in to finish the sorting.

Cultural experience

by Mel Trollman | April 12, 2021 3:12 AM

One of the things that made our fellowship with Aarigaa (a young adult group from the church) night so special is we got to experience hanging out with the locals. The leader of the young adult group, Tom, also talked a bit about his life growing up in Alaska and moving around to different native villages. We learned a lot. We also got to share a meal as well as play a game of broomball in the icy parking lot.
