The VIP (King) is Coming

The VIP (King) is Coming

Sara Marie Moore | Dec 18, 2014

People are helplessly bent toward looking up to other people as idols. In ancient times it was the king. In modern western culture it is the VIP: the president of the big company, the movie star and the musician. The American Idol. We long to have someone who represents all that we long to be: important, flawless and happy. We feel secure when we think we know that someone else has life under control. The problem is, none of us have life figured out. We are human, after all. But we want to think we can make it on our own. We start to worship humans. The CEO: we must please him at all costs and maybe we can become as important as him someday. The media star: we are drawn to make him the pinnacle of perfection. It's easy to understand why God revealed himself as the King of Kings to generations before us. He saw human hearts being turned towards other humans in an unhealthy way. He wanted to make sure they understood that he was above humanity as its Creator. He declared himself the King of Kings. He was saddened when the nation of Israel wanted a king so they could be like the other nations. The prophet Samuel remembered what the Lord spoke to him when Israel asked for a king in First Samuel 8:6-8.
"But when they said, "Give us a king to lead us," this displeased Samuel; so he prayed to the Lord. And the Lord told him: "Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king. As they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you" (NIV).
Samuel was a prophet and a priest. It was the type of leader God had ordained. A humble servant of the community. But they wanted more. They wanted someone to worship, not just someone to assist them in their worship. When Christ came on Christmas to save people from their sins, he was calling us to worship him as Creator. In his compassion he came in a form we could recognize and be drawn to worship. He had seen our fall to worship humanity, his creation. To win us back he came as a man and a newborn King. Fully God and fully man. So that we would realize we were made in his image. And using a title we recognized as valuable so that we would realize he is supreme. He is our Father. He is our King. Worshipping the Creator is the only worship which will truly satisfy. We were made for it. He is the CEO of CEOs, the President of Presidents, the Star of Stars, the VIP of VIPs. And he came to rescue us. He is in reality the humble servant type of leader he had originally chosen to represent himself. The Prophet of Prophets, the Priest of Priests, the Servant of Servants. So this Christmas when you sing, "Joy to The world! The Lord has come / Let earth receive her King / Let every heart prepare him room," quietly let him enter your heart is as your VIP of VIPs. He who made us all is worth everything.
