With every mission team that comes on their trip to support the ministry of a local church, it is like a log being thrown on the fire of what God is already doing in that community. With each log, the fire burns brighter and the message of God’s love radiates throughout the world as followers of Christ serve in unity.
COVID-19 has prevented many churches from physically going to serve this year, but one church refused to allow it to stop the ministry. They chose to get creative in an effort to build up and encourage their church partner who continues to minister to their community during this season. The pandemic meant that they couldn’t personally go to Belize to be with their friends whom they’ve partnered in ministry with for the past seven years, so the Log Church decided to send some of the funds that they had raised for their trip to bless their partner church. But then they took it a step further. They used the rest of those funds to empower a team of 12 local Belizeans to go on a mission trip to another part of Belize and to serve for a week at a local church!
Thanks to the support of the Log Church in Pennsylvania, a team of Belizean youth leaders served at Santa Familia Full Gospel Church, distributing food, putting on a VBS, and ministering to local youth, all while following local health guidelines. Each day, while getting out into the community, the team prayed with families and individuals, seeing God in new ways and learning from what He showed them.
For nearly everyone on the team, this was their first chance to serve on a mission trip! Opportunities to serve, even close to home, are few and far between for many Belizeans. In our experience, there is something really special that happens when teams that historically have hosted mission groups are now the ones sent. Their perspectives and heart for ministry are needed on the mission field. We are excited to continue exploring what God does when we break down the barriers that prevent these teams from going and create opportunities for God’s people to serve. In the midst of a season when a pandemic threatened to cut off the flow of ministry, a team of people were mobilized to share God’s love. This experience threw a log on the fire both for the host church in Caledonia, and fanned the flame for the team who are now back serving in their own communities.
For more photos and stories from the local Belize team that served, see their trip journal here. In the coming weeks, we at PPM are going to be sharing several stories of how our international churches have been inspired to serve in their own communities and abroad!
As we look to the future, we are launching the Global Access Fund with a vision to see the WHOLE Church mobilized to serve in unity on the mission field. We believe the local Church is the catalyst for reaching the world for Christ. It’s time that the full diversity and leadership of God’s people are able to join in this mission to reach our world with the hope of the Gospel.
We hope the story of the Log Church will inspire you to join us along this journey.
