Puerto Rico - The Lost Missions Destination

Puerto Rico - The Lost Missions Destination

Praying Pelican Staff | Oct 15, 2014

I remember when I first started working for Praying Pelican Missions and we were exploring where I would help. At the time Costa Rica and Puerto Rico were two areas that were in need of another trip leader. I told our Vice President Jason that I would go wherever there was a greater need. To be honest though, part of me was hoping it would be Costa Rica. The pioneer missionary in me was hoping for some "extreme needs"--backpacking through mountains and helping bring water (living water and physical) to remote villages. I unknowingly was stereotyping Puerto Rico. I assumed because it was a U.S. territory that it would be Americanized, and perhaps that its need would not be as great. After spending a significant amount of time on this small Caribbean Island, I now realize how amazing a place it is and just how many "extreme needs" there are. The spectrum of the ministry needs continue to increase as the debt and job crisis in this U.S. Territory deepen with no end in sight. The debt is well into the billions, and cannot be taken care of through bankruptcy, as only states within the U.S. can claim that (not territories like P.R.). The lack of jobs continue to force young people to seek employment in the continental U.S. Recent news articles have reported there are as many as 5 million Puerto Ricans in the US and 3 million on the island. The cost of living continues to soar--electricity for example is 3 times more expensive than in the U.S.    Yet through it all there is still this sense of community, of looking out for others. You can go into the neighborhoods surrounding the churches and pray with people in front of their homes. The crazy cool thing is Christ shows up!!! This is an Island that knows a lot about God and is now hungry to see more of Jesus. Christ has shown up in so many ways during my time serving alongside the churches here. From inner city churches with only a few employed members sending clothing to homeless communities, to churches painting and doing up-keep on homes throughout a whole community, to police officers helping with VBS ministry in one of the worst "projects" in San Juan. Through all these sorts of experiences during my time in Puerto Rico the "Pioneer Missionary" has been fully satisfied. In fact the similarity to ministry in the U.S. has been really good for me. The exposure to hunger for Christ and to Him "showing up" creates a chain reaction in my heart that is carrying over to my ministry back where I live. That is my prayer for every team that serves in Puerto Rico with us, that your ministry time here would carry over to your home.
