One Step Closer

One Step Closer

The partnership between Servant of Christ and Ebenezer House of Prayer is not a one-way partnership.

Sara Marie Moore | Oct 12, 2015

Youth Director Calvin Konop of Servant of Christ Lutheran in Champlin, Minn. and Pastor Winston Thompson of Ebenezer House of Prayer in South Side Chicago have taken their Pelican partnership one step closer. Servant of Christ Lutheran and Ebenezer House of Prayer stroke up a friendship the summer of 2014. The youth group from Servant of Christ came to host a vacation Bible school at Ebenezer. What came as a pleasant surprise was how the young adults of Ebenezer took the youth under their wing as if they were youth in their own church. The youth from Servant of Christ poured into the children in Ebenezer’s community and the young adults of Ebenezer poured into the youth from Servant of Christ. After the first trip, Youth Director Konop and Pastor Thompson kept in contact with each other and shared prayer requests. Konop then invited several college aged church members from Ebenezer to visit over Christmas vacation. His whole church was able to experience the partnership Servant of Christ had with Ebenezer in Chicago. The young adults from Ebenezer also took part in ministering to the youth at Servant of Christ. One of the young adults who came to visit was Donnell. He works with the youth at his church and so was able to assist in the youth ministry at Servant of Christ. Donnell also learned from Calvin more about youth ministry. “I was able to learn a lot from the way he deals with the youth,” said Donnell. “It has been really beneficial to see someone who does what I do, but at a larger capacity.” The youth from Servant of Christ partnered with Ebenezer again this summer by hosting another Vacation Bible School in the community. Many of the children remembered the youth from the year before and the games they had played with them. The partnership between Servant of Christ and Ebenezer House of Prayer is not a one-way partnership. “They pray for us. We are praying for them,” said Konop “The long-term relationship that I want our church to have is something that every church can have. There is an impact on both ends. It is not one church going in and trying to save a community, but it is a partnership, which means one church that is there all year and one church that isn’t there all year. And so we are able to come in and help build on the momentum that church has already made. I think that is what missions is all about: consistently helping someone as they are consistently helping you.” 10838115_10203119473003436_677603354200359952_o

Donnell felt that Servant of Christ and Ebenezer churches were both learning about outreach together as they did it. “They learned what true service looks like and that it is not going to be easy. Sometimes you have to take the initiative and go out of your way to meet a need,” said Donnell. “We were able to see examples of what we can do beyond Sunday to make an impact. We were learning with them. We were able to see first-hand the impact we could have if we dedicate ourselves to serving.” Donnell felt like Praying Pelican Missions came to his church “For such a time as this,” much like Esther’s story in the Bible. “We were on the cusp of something and Praying Pelican came along and they showed us what service looks like beyond Sunday. We were on the brink of that. Who knows whether or not they are here for such a time as this, to help us get to a higher level in the community as far as our service to them. We have the people, we have the facility, we have everything we need, we just need to do it.”
