How we Lead

How we Lead

Mike Rhoades | Mar 10, 2015

We are surrounded by the idea of leadership. As young people we are constantly challenged to "step up and become a leader." It’s our culture, we covet power, progress, esteem, and in the church it's become an idol for many. BUT…Somewhere along the way we began to equate leadership with a position. Influence became a form of dictatorship and in the process we opened the door to pride. Pride is insular, it removes us from those we are trying to lead and actually begins to sabotage our leadership. In his book 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership, John Maxwell claims leadership is strictly a product of influence and that influence comes when we add value to others by serving them. Leadership is funny like that. We are most influential when we feel least like a leader. When we begin aspire to leadership our influence will inevitably begin dip. We look to a person like Steve Jobs and call him an incredible leader, but was he? His products were revolutionary but he was known to be incredibly difficult to work with. Did he lead or did he intimidate? We need more leaders, true leaders, those who garner influence through their genuine heart to serve and empower. As Christian “leaders” we are in a position to set a better standard. Do you have a vision to see your church change the city? Be more about those you serve than about the church you are building. One of the most horrific examples of poor leadership in the modern church is our execution of the mission of the church. We build programs to fix the problems in communities before we ask how we can help. We build church events/services and tell people to “come and find Jesus.” We go to other countries and proceed to tell them how to fix their problems.  Is that really leadership? At Praying Pelican Missions, we’re attempting to take a different approach, an approach of leadership. We ask how we can help, we jump into the natural flow of ministry within communities and serve.  Some would be shocked to see how the influence of PPM is growing throughout the world.  It hasn't been splashy, it's been through intentional service. Here’s the challenge, let go of the pride filled, control freak style of leadership that most follow and begin to serve. Genuinely seek to add value to the people, causes, organizations you're apart of. Leadership is influence and influence comes through service. Let's Go Serve.     photo credit: http://stjameselmhurst.org/building-leadership/
