Backyard Missionaries

“I have seen a deepening of their faith as they are able to step into a new community they are not used to and step into a context that is not entirely familiar with them,” said Unger.  He wants them to see the needs in their own backyard.

Youth Pastor Andrew Unger is all about missions — in his youth’s backyard. That’s why he took his youth across Chicago, from Wheaton, Ill. to Dolton, Ill., on a summer mission trip in 2014. And it’s why he took them back again in 2015. And why he’s returning in 2016. The All Souls Anglican pastor wants his students to learn that missions is a lifestyle, not a destination. Through Praying Pelican Missions he partnered with New Community Church, in a low-income area not far from home. It only took an hour to drive there. Unger approached the mission trip as a chance to support and reinforce the ministry New Community Church is already doing. “We were really welcomed into the work and welcomed into their activities,” sad Unger. “My teens really loved getting the chance to roll up their sleeves  and get into the work of ministry. It seems like the people of the church at New Community seem to really love when our group comes. They really like when the Pelicans show up.” The team did a combination of relational and practical ministry. They fixed abandoned houses and did park clean-up, which the community really appreciated. “People came by and thanked us for what we were doing,” said Unger. .AllSouls4          AllSouls1

Children’s ministry was the team’s focus in relational ministry. The youth on the team also enjoyed prayer walking and recognized God’s presence and his work in new ways. “I have seen a deepening of their faith as they are able to step into a new community they are not used to and step into a context that is not entirely familiar with them,” said Unger.  He wants them to see the needs in their own backyard. “Hopefully it creates in my students a sense of mission that spills outside of just our mission trip week," he said. "That can easily happen with international trips as well, but I think there is something special about a domestic trip that says ‘You can do this work all the time.’ The people we are working with, who are going  with us on prayer walks or doing this work, they are doing this in their everyday lives as well.” Unger is aiming to empower the next generation to be missionaries without having to live up to the stereotype of living in a foreign country. “Hopefully my youth can start to imagine what it looks like for them to be missionaries in their own neighborhoods or what it would look like for them to choose to live in an area that is not someplace ideal for them, but to be a missional presence in a different area,” he said. “I hope it excites their imaginations because most of them will not be international missionaries, but hopefully all of them can really develop a sense of what it looks like to do missions in their own backyard. I think that is a really, really important thing for my students as they grow into adulthood, to incorporate as part of their understanding of what it means to follow Christ.”
