Are You Humble Enough To Learn From Those You Serve?

Are You Humble Enough To Learn From Those You Serve?

Mike Rhoades | Aug 12, 2015

It’s not often that a person with much has the humility to learn from those who have little. Each year thousands of well-meaning people go on mission trips to serve in some of the most poverty stricken places on earth. They carry with them the belief they can make a difference through service and with the Gospel. Inevitably, most return home feeling more blessed and uplifted than they could have imagined. Bill Hybels, lead pastor at Willow Creek Community Church and best selling author, said, “Armed with enough humility, leaders can learn from everyone.” There is no greater example of humility in leadership than in the story of a PPM team in “Liberty City,” a rough neighborhood of Miami. They wrote: "We are getting the opportunity to bless Liberty City with a fresh coat of paint on their patios. Liberty City is a rough part of Miami that has joined together to better their community. They created after school programs, summer school programs, and the neighborhood is covered in color. The people from the community come up with ideas on how to better the neighborhood. The need for more fresh fruits and vegetables was covered by the building of a community garden. One of the youth said that they wanted to see their friends and neighbors getting in better shape; they now have a community gym with donated equipment available every day. Talk about lifting each other up." This must have been what the church in Acts was like the day Peter preached the Gospel and 3000 came to know Christ. The Bible describes that church like this: “All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need.” (Acts 2:44-45) The people of Liberty City have come together to address real needs within their community. Liberty City should stand as a reminder of the power of community for us all. No one is taking credit for the gardens being built or the community gym. People are working together, in common, to bring life to their city. We often have so much that we don’t know how to live in common. Overcoming in life has little to do with who we are and so much to do with who is around us. Go on a mission trip and you will be blown away by the joy in the midst of challenging circumstances. Where does this joy come from? Maybe it’s from life in common, a shared burden where people are more concerned with encouragement than credit. Thank you Liberty City for a perfect lesson on community.
