Adoration

Maybe this Christmas we could all benefit from a little more adoration. Fixing our gaze on Jesus, shutting down the distractions for a moment, and just existing in His presence. The joy of adoration is that we often see things we previously missed.

Mike Rhoades | Dec 3, 2015

Snow. Hot chocolate. Candy canes. Ugly holiday sweaters. Black Friday fist fights. This is Christmas, a frantic celebration of decadence, family, and faith all wrapped into one glittering gift stuffed under a billowing green spruce. Christmas is amazing. No, Christmas is terrible. Wait it's not Christmas, it's 2015 and we don't discriminate, it's the Holidays. This is confusing. What a beautiful mess the month of December has become. Some strange force seems to whip the planet into a frothy frenzy for 30ish days. Strangely, in spite of numerous sermons or blogs, the sheer production of the Christmas season can make it easy for us to forget why this celebration even exists. Truth is, Christmas is as much about celebration as it is about adoration. Celebrations by their nature are chaotic, excitable events. It's right to break into celebration overload as we remember the birth of Jesus. But then there is also adoration. To sit and stare for a while. To be awestruck, dumbfounded by the overwhelming presence of Jesus and the impact of His life. Adoration replaces the need to go crazy with the incapacity to move from His presence. I have a tendency to recoil at the unmitigated flow of warm fuzzies during the Christmas season. The holidays to me can be incredibly frustrating because they are disruptive. I like progress, to a fault, and things that make me slow down create tension in me. But, this last Friday, as we were decorating the Christmas tree with our kids I chose to pause, shut the phone off, and just adore the moment. Watching my two little kids, vibrating with Christmas energy, hanging ornaments. It was perfect. I added nothing to the moment but I gained time in the presence of my incredible children that is worth the world. Maybe this Christmas we could all benefit from a little more adoration. Fixing our gaze on Jesus, shutting down the distractions for a moment, and just existing in His presence. The joy of adoration is that we often see things we previously missed. Maybe, the lesson is even bigger. Do we adore those around us? Do we take the time to sit, listen, love, and take in every nuance of their existence. Crazy thought, we might discover beauty and power we didn't know was there. Adoration, it's a simple thought. Much like the idea of a piece of plastic poised at the top of a snowy hill, but the results are exhilarating.
