3 Great Group Games for Youth

3 Great Group Games for Youth

by: Mike Rhoades

We’ve all been there, it’s Wednesday afternoon and you have no idea what game your going to play at youth group.  You know you can’t play dodgeball…AGAIN.  Here are 3 great group games to change things up and generate some excitement in your group.

Orb Tag: This game can be played outdoors/indoors but it needs to be done when it’s dark, the darker the better. Orb tag is a crazy mash up of capture the flag, tag, and sardines during which one team defends the glowing orbs while another frantically tries to steal them and take them back to base without getting caught.
  • Materials
    • 2 packages of LED balloons from Walmart (check the party section)
  • Game Length:  15-30 minutes
  • How to Play:
    • Divide the group into two teams.  Each team will take turns hiding and defending the glowing orbs. The Game is over when all the orbs have been captured or all the members of the stealing team have been caught.
    • When a player on the stealing team is tagged by a player from the defending team that player is caught and must sit out till the end of the game.
    • The defending players must stay at least ten feet away from each orb.
Grog:  A scavenger hunt mixed with freeze tag
  • Materials:
    • A cheap plastic flash light that easily comes apart and reassembles, a building with many rooms or semi large grounds. This game is best at night with few lights on.
  • Game Length:  5-15 minutes
  • How To Play:
    • All players gather in one room. One or two players volunteer to be the Grogs and take the flashlight and leave the room.
    • The Grogs open the flashlight and remove batteries and hide them in relatively hard places but still visible.
    • Once ready, the rest of players emerge and run around trying to find and assemble the flashlight.
    • The Grogs run around tagging people to delay the flashlight from being put together. Once tagged, players are frozen until someone unfrozen tags them. If all youth are tagged at same time the Grogs win.
Belly Button Wars:  A crazy version of tag that can be played with multiple teams.
  • Materials:
    • Colored duct tape, you will need one color for each team (Walmart has a great selection).
  • Game Length:  10-15 minutes
  • How to Play:
    • Divide you group into teams and give each team a role of duct tape. Have them each place a small strip on their shirt near their belly button
    • It works best to play in a defined space to keep players from hiding in the corner.
    • Last team standing wins, each team tries to get the other teams duct tape.  Once you lose your duct tape you’re out.  Players are not allowed to cover their tape with their hand.
What are some of your favorite and maybe out of the ordinary youth group games?
